Each exam announcement for a specific job title provides information on the minimum qualifications necessary to take the exam. Read this carefully. You must meet the qualifications in order to take the exam.
Experience in a particular field of work may be required for some jobs, and may be more important than educational credentials. Some jobs also will require a demonstration of proficiency at certain skills, such as typing or fluency in a second language, or require a physical exam.
If you are qualified to take an exam, you need to complete an application along with the application processing fee. You may be able to apply on-line or download the announcement and appropriate application.Your application will be reviewed to ensure that you meet the minimum qualifications.
Most New York State Department of Civil Service examinations require an application fee, although fees may be waived for eligible individuals who submit a fee waiver request with their examination application. Information on fee waivers appears on our application forms. Application processing fees are non-refundable.
After you apply, you will receive notification letting you know if you were approved or disapproved to compete in the examination.
