Retirements create plentiful opportunities

Brooklyn - The New York State Department of Civil Service today officially opened a new outreach office in an effort to enlist the talents of those qualified job-seekers who may not be aware of the many and varied career opportunities in state government.

The office is in the Carroll Street Building on the campus of Medgar Evers College. The college has provided the space as a special service to its students and the surrounding community.

"Service in state government is work that matters," said Civil Service Commissioner Nancy G. Groenwegen. "The pay is competitive and the benefits generous. Medgar Evers College has always been a valuable resource to the local community and we are grateful to them for helping us spread the word that these career opportunities are real."

"This new alliance with the New York State Department of Civil Service adds new vigor to the College's ongoing efforts to revitalize the Brooklyn communities we are entrusted to serve," said Dr. Edison O. Jackson, President of Medgar Evers College. "With our commitment to the provision of the best in educational opportunities and Governor Eliot Spitzer's dedication to ensuring exciting and universal employment prospects, the success of this partnership and its goals is assured."

They spoke at a reception held at the college and attended by state, college and community representatives.

The location of the office is particularly strategic, Commissioner Groenwegen said, because some of the study programs Medgar Evers College offers are for areas where New York State has had trouble filling available positions. These include nursing, accounting and auditing, and information technology. The State, however, employs people with every degree that the College offers. In the New York Metropolitan Area alone, New York State has more than 43,000 employees.

"Governor Spitzer has made it clear that he is committed to building an innovative, results-oriented workforce and a diverse workforce," Commissioner Groenwegen said. "We will find individuals who are all these things here in Brooklyn."

The Department of Civil Service is the central human resources agency responsible for staffing all executive branch agencies of state government. An unprecedented wave of "Baby Boomer" retirements has created a significant recruiting challenge for New York State. The challenge for the recruiters, however, becomes an opportunity for the recruited.

"New York State has a well-deserved reputation as a generous and family-friendly employer," said Commissioner Groenwegen. "Public service work can be demanding, but for those committed to it, it's more than making a living. It's making a difference."

The Medgar Evers outreach office is in Room M-5 on the main floor of the college's Carroll Street Building, 1150 Carroll Street, between Nostrand and Rogers Avenues. The office is being run by Najuma Herimaat, who will attend job fairs, conduct seminars on career opportunities with the state and taking job tests, and work closely with the college's Career Development Department to match candidates with jobs opportunities. The telephone number is 718 804-8278 and the email address najuma.herimaat@cs.state.ny.us.
