Sinnott Confirmed for New Term on Civil Service Commission

Albany, NY--New York State Civil Service Commissioner George C. Sinnott was confirmed Tuesday to a six-year term as a member of the New York State Civil Service Commission by the State Senate.

Sinnott, who has headed the State Civil Service Department since 1995, was nominated for the new term by Governor George E. Pataki.

"Commissioner Sinnott has been the leading force in transforming the Department of Civil Service into the pre-eminent state human resource agency in the nation," said Governor Pataki.

"I am deeply appreciative of the confidence the Governor has placed in me by naming me to another term as a member of the Civil Service Commission," said Commissioner Sinnott. "Working as a team with the entire staff at the Department of Civil Service, we intend to continue to build upon the significant progress we have made since 1995."

The three-member Civil Service Commission adopts and modifies rules governing a wide range of State civil service matters affecting nearly 170,000 State civil service employees. As head of the Department of Civil Service, Commissioner Sinnott serves as President of the Commission.

The Commission also hears and determines appeals on such matters as examination qualifications, examination ratings, position classifications, pay grade determinations and disciplinary actions. In addition, the Commission oversees the operations of municipal Civil Service Commissions and city and county personnel officers. There are more than 370,000 local government employees serving in municipalities across the State.

Since 1995, the Department of Civil Service has won several prestigious national awards. Commissioner Sinnott was also recently elected to the Executive Board of the International Personnel Management Association where he is the representative for the 50 states.

Commissioner Sinnott, 58, lives in Clifton Park with his wife, Judy and their two children, Kathleen and Timothy Patrick.
