Greater Albany Area
As the capital of New York State, Albany has been a major government center and, consequently, government has an enormous impact on the area. The State of New York is the largest employer in the area. The majority of New York State offices are currently located on the W. Averell Harriman State Office Campus on the western edge of the City of Albany. Several other state offices are located in different locations throughout Albany and adjoining cities. Others are based, or have branch offices, in New York City and other metropolitan areas.
