Classification Specification

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

Toll Collectors collect and register tolls charged to motorists for traveling on toll bridges and toll roads, maintain records of tolls collected, and perform routine maintenance of their work areas.

Toll Collectors are classified only in the Bridge Authority and the Thruway Authority.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

TOLL COLLECTOR: collect and account for tolls; assigned only to toll collection facilities; full and part time; assigned to day, evening, and weekend shifts; must be courteous to customers while working in an environment that may be stressful.

RELATED CLASSES

Senior Toll Collectors are lead workers that supervise Toll Collectors on an assigned shift and collect tolls. They are assigned to toll collection facilities operated by the New York State Bridge Authority.

Toll Plaza Managers are in charge of toll collection activities at a Thruway Authority toll plaza, including maintaining facilities, scheduling, training, and supervising staff, monitoring and evaluating internal controls and cost controls, and handling customer and employee relations.

Calculations Clerks compute, calculate, and reconcile numerical data related to account keeping, auditing, statistics, payroll, and other numerical records and data.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

TOLL COLLECTOR: issues toll tickets to motorists; determines the toll charged for each vehicle passing through the toll booth by observing the type and size of the vehicle, determining the distance traveled from the toll ticket, and selecting the applicable toll; receives money and toll tickets, calculates and returns change, and issues receipts to motorists for money collected; answers questions and gives directions; records money collected and counts and reconciles money with toll tickets and vehicle counts; maintains records of work activities; directs traffic at toll booths for short periods of time; keeps collection booth neat and clean and performs routine maintenance; removes snow from traffic lanes and treadles; calls for emergency assistance; assists motorists in reporting problems; and may transport money, tickets, and reports from one facility to another.
