Positions in this title series apply technical knowledge and skills to supervise and perform the design, construction, and installation of exhibits at State historic sites and supervise all technical and skilled craft workers assigned to construct and install exhibits. These positions are found only in the Exhibits Section of the Bureau of Historic Sites, Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
Supervising Museum Exhibit Specialists in various parenthetic titles supervise and participate in the design, construction, and installation of exhibits at the State Museum by supervising lower level Museum Exhibit Specialists and Technicians assigned to a particular workshop or craft specialty, such as Photography, Taxidermy, or Restoration. The larger and more complex exhibits at the State Museum require more highly specialized staff and shops than those of the Bureau of Historic Sites.
Interpretive Program Assistants plan and conduct educational programs at historic sites and assure that exhibits reflect the interpretive plan for the site by assisting in planning exhibits, providing information about the material or events portrayed, and verifying the historical accuracy of planned exhibits.
SUPERVISING MUSEUM EXHIBIT SPECIALIST: one position class; non-competitive jurisdictional class; serves as overall assistant supervisor of the Exhibits Section; work emphasizes the technical and mechanical aspects of exhibit design, construction, and installation.
CHIEF OF HISTORIC SITES EXHIBITS: one position class; highest
level exhibits specialist for the agency; supervises and coordinates
exhibit planning, design, and construction.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
SUPERVISING MUSEUM EXHIBIT SPECIALIST: under the direction and approval of the Chief of Historic Sites Exhibits, develops a concept for an exhibit and reviews all available material; discusses plans with the Chief and site staff; visits installation site to determine dimensions and characteristics of site and physical limitations affecting the construction and installation; designs the exhibit and the physical layout in a logical progression; prepares detailed blueprints; estimates, selects, and purchases materials; schedules fabrication, including contractor and staff work, and supervises construction and installation; determines how to display historic objects and the treatment and security needed for them; constructs specialized shipping crates; prepares specifications for contracts and purchases; assists in scheduling all unit work and staff; determines start and completion dates for all projects; maintains and refurbishes existing exhibits; and supervises and trains staff.
CHIEF OF HISTORIC SITES EXHIBITS: meets with Historic Site Managers to determine exhibit concepts and plan exhibit designs, using historical research and objects, that meet the educational and interpretive needs of the sites; determines artifacts needed to prepare a story line and the special treatments that will be needed to use them; determines the types of materials and building techniques needed for the exhibit; formulates project details and schedules and evaluates progress by meetings and inspections; coordinates the work elements of the project, including staff assigned to script writing, audiovisual preparation, photography, exhibit construction, story board layout, and artifact research and conservation; reviews production to ensure accurate and authentic detail; supervises installation, refurbishing and major maintenance and revisions to exhibits; assists site management staff in evaluating site programming and exhibits and assists in preparing the exhibits portion of site Master Plans; serves as a consultant and advisor to other agency bureaus, municipalities, and not-for-profit organizations regarding the development, design and construction of exhibits; and prepares scale drawings of projects.
SUPERVISING MUSEUM EXHIBIT SPECIALIST
Non-competitive: six years of experience in the design, construction, and installation of museum exhibits or other two and three-dimensional diorama design work, including one year in a supervisory capacity; an Associate's Degree in fine arts, industrial design, architectural drawing, engineering or architectural technology, or a closely related field may be substituted for one year of the general experience.
CHIEF OF HISTORIC SITES EXHIBITS
Open Competitive: a Bachelor's Degree in industrial design, graphic arts, fine arts, or architecture and six years of experience as above, including four years in a supervisory capacity; a specialized Master's Degree may be substituted for two years of the general experience.
