BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
The Supervisor Optical Laboratory Training and Production provides vocational, industrial, and production training and supervision to prepare individuals for, or to individuals engaged in, optical laboratory activities, primarily mechanical work on inert matter. The incumbent integrates vocational or academic programs provided to wards of the State at the Wallkill Correctional Facility, and to inmates wishing to prepare for careers following release.
This position is classified at the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS).
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Supervisor Optical Laboratory Training and Production: one position class; supervisory level; American Board of Opticianry certified in adapting and fitting lenses for the correction of deficiencies, deformities or anomalies of the human eyes, or the ordering of contact lenses on written prescriptions from a licensed physician or optometrist; teaches and supervises others engaged in related laboratory work.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
Teaches optical theory and science to prepare students to pass the American Board of Opticianry exam and the State Education Board test for ophthalmic dispensing.
Oversees the filling of prescriptions for all State Correctional Facilities and for New York City Department of Corrections.
Purchases and instructs the students in the purchasing of materials, maintains inventory levels, and orders machine replacement parts.
Supervises production foreman, to ensure high quality standards in the work of inmates.
Supervises inmate students and keeps records on students progress and work assignments.
Coordinates various efforts with outside employers to find job placement for inmates after release.
Evaluates foremans work and inmates work and prepares reports on same.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Promotion: two years of permanent competitive service as an Industrial Training Supervisor 3 (Optical Manufacturing) or General Industrial Training Supervisor (Optical Manufacturing), and be American Board of Opticianry certified.
