BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

 

Investigative Aides perform clerical and technical activities, such as taking complaints, verifying information in records, conducting interviews, and preparing case workups to assist professional investigators and attorneys in conducting investigations.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

Assigned to investigative programs; requires fieldwork to gather or verify information and interview witnesses; may testify at hearings and in court.

 

RELATED CLASSES

 

Investigators, Investigative Officers, and Investigative Specialists investigate reported or suspected violations of law, rule or regulation relating to an agencys enforcement, regulatory, compensation award or licensing programs. They use a variety of investigative techniques, including gathering and verifying information, interviewing witnesses and complainants, reviewing electronic and paper documents, and conducting surveillance and undercover activities to obtain information and evidence. They prepare written reports of their findings, which may be used by agency management and law enforcement in support or defense of administrative or criminal charges, the imposition or collection of fines, penalties or other sanctions, and the negotiation of settlements. They may perform other tasks that support compliance with an agencys laws, rules and regulations; and testify at administrative or criminal proceedings.

 

Office Assistants 2 either supervise two or more Office Assistants 1 or other lower-level staff; and/or directly perform the more difficult or complicated clerical processing and office support work for which substantive knowledge of the program area is required.

 

Agency Program Aides perform a variety of paraprofessional technical and/or program activities to support the work of professional staff in the administration of agency-specific programs.

 

Legal Assistants perform a variety of paralegal activities that require formal education and experience. 

 


 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

·       Manages incoming requests for investigations and complaints by receiving requests and complaints from callers and letters, obtaining details and clarifying information, determining and securing additional information needed, and sorting requests according to their relative importance.

 

·       Manages case files by setting up records, keeping records of documents sought and received, maintaining records of case activity, preparing narrative reports about case activities, maintaining the security of files, and preserving evidence.

 

·       Obtains and corroborates information and official records from courts, police departments, halls of records, government agencies, individuals, and other sources.

 

·       Verifies the authenticity of documents received; examines documents to assure that they are not altered or forged.

 

·       Conducts interviews with witnesses and complainants and records their statements.

 

·       Obtains physical evidence by taking photographs and measurements.

 

·        Serves legal process by locating individuals, preparing paperwork, and serving documents; serves as a decoy or witness to assist in establishing a case.

 

·       Testifies in court and at hearings.

 

·       Processes requests for information from federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies and other government agencies.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Transition:  one year of permanent competitive service in a position allocated at or above Grade 4; appointees may be required to have a license to operate a motor vehicle.
