Marine Helpers assist in maintaining and operating vessels and equipment, and make repairs to canal channels and embankments and other shore-based activities. The New York State Canal System, includes the Erie, Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca Canals, linking the Hudson River with the Great Lakes, the Finger Lakes and Lake Champlain.
These positions are in the labor class and are classified only at the New York State Canal Corporation.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
MARINE HELPER: labor class; operates and maintains tugs, barges, and other operating vessels and equipment used in maintenance and repair activities.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
MARINE HELPER: cleans, lubricates, and paints engines and machinery; acts as a deck hand; assists with repairs and renovations of floating equipment; operates small boats; and performs patrol for personnel safety.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Labor Class: There are no education or experience qualifications for this class. Marine Helpers must be physically able to perform the duties assigned, and must possess and maintain a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
