Classification Standard

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS SERIES

Security Services Assistants patrol State facilities during times when the premises are open to business or to the public to detect security incidents and to deter criminal activities by means of presence and witness.

The positions are classified at various State agencies.

DISTINGUSHING CHARACTERISTICS

Classification of Security Services Assistants is determined by the nature of security problems encountered, level of supervision, and scope of training required for the security assignment.  Security Services Assistants have no peace or police officer status, but must have a valid Security Guard registration issued by the New York State (NYS) Department of State (DOS).  Positions that engage and confront unruly or irate clients and visitors, or may be designated as special police or special patrolman are classified as Security Officers.

SECURITY SERVICES ASSISTANT 1: entry-level; independently patrols and monitors State buildings and facilities that are open to the public but does not regularly encounter unruly or irate clients and visitors; reports security incidents to higher level security staff or agency management according to prescribed procedures.

SECURITY SERVICES ASSISTANT 2: supervisory level; supervises and coordinates the activities of Security Services Assistants 1 or contract security staff on a shift, or in a geographic area.

RELATED CLASSES

Security Services Aides make rounds of State buildings and grounds, during times when such facilities are closed to business or the public, or during times of minimal use to detect burglaries, vandalism, building maintenance problems, fire hazards and equipment failures.
