Classification Standard

 

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS SERIES

 

          Apiary Inspectors inspect honey bee colonies, beekeeping equipment, and apiary records to enforce regulatory requirements to control and eradicate bee pests and diseases. These positions are located only in the Department of Agriculture and Markets.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

          Apiary Inspectors are in the non-competitive jurisdictional class and classified on a seasonal basis.  The level of appointment is dependent upon experience in the management of honey bee colonies, or length of service as an Apiary Inspector with Agriculture and Markets. 

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

          APIARY INSPECTOR 1, 2, and 3: inspects beekeeping colonies to detect infectious, contagious, or communicable bee pests and diseases, and enforces regulatory requirements; maintains communications with beekeeping organizations, federal officials, researchers, and local officials in joint programs to control bee diseases; inspects honey bee colonies for both inter-and intra-state transportation to ensure compliance with requirements; prepares records, forms, files, and inspection reports; and supervises the destruction of infested/infected material, if necessary.

 

          APIARY INSPECTOR 4:  performs all duties of an Apiary Inspector 1, 2 and 3; and provides leadership and trains new honey bee inspectors.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

          APIARY INSPECTOR 1

 

Non-competitive: two years of experience* in the management of honey bee colonies. 

 

          APIARY INSPECTOR 2

 

Non-competitive:  three years of experience* in the management of honey bee colonies; or successful completion of one season (minimum of 60 working days) as an Apiary Inspector 1.

 

          APIARY INSPECTOR 3

 

Non-competitive:  four years of experience* in the management of honey bee colonies; or successful completion of two consecutive seasons of employment as an Apiary Inspector 2.

 

          APIARY INSPECTOR 4

 

Non-competitive:  five years of experience* in the management of honey bee colonies; or successful completion of three consecutive seasons of employment as an Apiary Inspector 3.

 

 

*Substitution:  possession of three college credits in a beekeeping course may substitute for six months of experience.
