Classification Specification

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

Conservation Operations Supervisors 1 perform, supervise, and assist in coordinating a variety of site specific maintenance, purchase, and monitoring activities at Department of Environmental Conservation facilities and property. These positions are classified only in regional offices and facilities of the Department of Environmental Conservation.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

CONSERVATION OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR 1: non-competitive jurisdictional class; first supervisory level; supervises primarily seasonal staff assigned to maintenance and operation of agency facilities; may operate heavy equipment, such as backhoes.

RELATED CLASSES

Maintenance Assistants use hand and shop tools to perform semiskilled maintenance and repair work on structures and equipment.

Park Supervisors 1 supervise Park Workers assigned to the maintenance and operations of park facilities.

Conservation Operations Supervisors 2 supervise several work crews at multiple locations in the repair and maintenance of agency buildings and facility infrastructure.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

CONSERVATION OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR 1: supervises subordinate staff and volunteers in the maintenance of buildings, infrastructure, and recreational and wildlife management areas; review construction and maintenance activities performed by contractors for conformance to contract; requisitions and maintains records of supplies, materials, and equipment; prepares work plans and reviews time and activity sheets for subordinates; may serve as working supervisor and assists staff in maintenance and upkeep activities or performs these duties independently; may operate heavy equipment as needed; and trains and coordinates activities of seasonal staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

CONSERVATION OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR 1

Non-competitive: three years of experience in general construction or maintenance and possession of a valid NYS driver’s license appropriate for the types of vehicles to be operated.
