BASIC DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
Stores Clerks 1 perform a variety of clerical and manual activities
in receiving, storing and issuing goods, materials, equipment
and records in a stockroom, warehouse, records center, institution
retail store or commissary and perform related recordkeeping activities.
These activities are accomplished in accordance with applicable
procedures, rules, regulations and laws.
CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA
To support classification as Stores Clerk 1, incumbents must
spend the major portion of their time performing clerical and
manual tasks related to stores keeping.
RELATED CLASSES
Clerk 1 - Process transactions and maintain records in a variety
of organizational settings. They do not spend the major portion
of their time performing duties involving only calculations, keyboarding
or storekeeping although they may perform duties in these areas.
Calculations Clerk 1 - To support classification as Calculations
Clerk 1, incumbents must spend the majority of their time performing
tasks in which mathematical calculations are fundamental.
BASIC DUTIES AND ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
BASIC DUTIES:
- Receive, examine and account for incoming material, i.e.,
equipment, supplies, forms, etc.
- Issue and deliver supplies, equipment, parts or tools from
stock; package goods for shipment.
- Take physical inventory and maintain perpetual inventory
records.
- Load, unload, and otherwise physically handle equipment and
furniture, supplies, etc.
- Operate a retail store or commissary operation.
- Code and dispose of physical records and files.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS:
- Unload or assist others in unloading materials utilizing
appropriate materials handling equipment.
- Check shipping document against purchase order to insure
accuracy of shipment.
- Unpack, count, sort or weigh incoming articles to verify
receipt against orders.
- Sign receipt for shipment.
- Prepare written report or orally advise supervisor on receipt
of damaged goods or of incomplete or incorrect shipments.
- Mark identifying codes on or price articles following established
procedures and prepare inventory cards.
- Store articles on display shelves, racks and bins, or on
the floor, utilizing materials handling equipment. Store perishable
foodstuffs in refrigerator and freezer areas.
- Post information concerning the quantity and type of stock
received on appropriate records.
- Keep loading, storage and work areas and equipment free of
dust and dirt.
- Reorder supplies.
- Operate duplicating equipment in reproducing printed material.
- Occasionally operate a motor vehicle to pick up and deliver
supplies.
- Prepare short order food and beverage requests.
- Prepare and batch order forms.
- Occasionally perform duties of related Clerk positions but
such tasks should not be the predominant duties of any position
in this class.
INDEPENDENCE OF OPERATION
Incumbents work under direct supervision and clearly defined
guidelines. They are supervised by either higher-level clerical
staff or a program manager.
COMPLEXITY
This is the entry-level title in this series. Incumbents work
within and must be able to read, understand and apply procedures,
rules, regulations and laws.
COMMUNICATION
Stores Clerks 1 communicate with a variety of people including
vendors, shippers, clients/inmates and other agency staff for
the purpose of explaining or furnishing factual information concerning
stores or records operations, procedures or regulations. Incumbents
may work individually or in conjunction with other staff.
Incumbents may assist and train other employees and workers
in procedures and methods.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge of the accepted methods and practices used in receiving,
storing and issuing materials.
- Knowledge of inventory procedures.
- Ability to bend, lift and climb and to stand and walk for
long periods of time.
- Ability to prepare and maintain standard numerical records
and reports.
- Ability to operate a variety of office machines.
- Ability to perform manual work.
- Ability to operate a variety of materials handling equipment
such as forklifts, pallet jacks, transporters, side loaders and
stackers.
- Ability to read and use a variety of supply catalogs and
manuals.
- Ability to perform tasks accurately within prescribed time
frames.
MINIMUM OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to pass job-related examination.
- Ability to perform manual labor.
