BASIC DUTIES AND ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

INDEPENDENCE OF OPERATION

Incumbents of positions in this class may function as the top stores clerk in a stores operation, may provide the sole stores clerk clerical support or in a larger operation, may provide assistance to higher level staff. Incumbents typically work with little or no technical supervision. They must understand the rules, regulations and procedures governing the stores operation in which they are assigned and must be able to apply them in making independent decisions involving the ordering, reordering, delivery, storage, and distribution of goods, materials, supplies, and equipment.

COMPLEXITY

The work performed by Stores Clerks 2 requires overall knowledge of warehousing and stores operations and the agency stores program and objectives. It is distinguished from entry level work where stores clerks order materials as instructed, check orders received but refer problems to others for resolution, take inventory under supervision and have little or no communication with vendors, manufacturers or shippers.

COMMUNICATION

Stores Clerks 2 have frequent oral communications involving face-to-face and telephone contacts and occasional written communications with a variety of individuals, including users, vendors, shippers, manufacturers and agency staff. The nature of this communication, while it may vary depending on the area of assignment, generally involves explaining, gathering or furnishing factual information pertinent to stores operations, procedures or regulations and resolving discrepancies and problems. There may be frequent communications with users and agency staff in furnishing items requested and making appropriate substitutions when the requested item is not readily available; with vendors and manufacturers concerning products, the placement or delivery of orders and instances involving damaged goods and discrepant orders; and with shippers and common carriers on transportation schedules and delivery rates.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Stores Clerks 2 may function as supervisors of three to eight clerical support staff. In such cases, supervisors are responsible for the quality and quantity of work produced by the subordinate staff; select, train, evaluate, counsel and, as necessary, discipline employees; plan, organize, assign, review work, and schedule activities in the work unit; provide guidance, resolve problems and make decisions in technical and administrative matters; establish/adjust work schedules and assignments as needed and review time cards; coordinate the work of their unit with that of other work units; communicate management policies to subordinate staff; and prepare workload statistics and related reports.

In addition to the supervision, incumbents also have their own body of work for which they are responsible. Supervision is not a requirement to support classification of these positions.
