Classification Standard

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

Agency Program Aides function as paraprofessionals that provide program or technical support in a program by performing a wide variety of program activities and tasks to support the work of professional and technical positions. They are assigned to program areas in a number of State agencies.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

AGENCY PROGRAM AIDE: performs paraprofessional duties and provides program and technical assistance for one or more professional and technical positions; performs assignments characterized by application of clearly appropriate guidelines or precedents.

RELATED CLASSES

Administrative Aides perform paraprofessional activities and tasks that support the work of professional administrative positions.

Accountant/Auditor Aides perform paraprofessional activities and tasks that support the work of accountants and auditors.

Legal Assistants 1 perform paralegal activities and tasks that support the work of attorneys.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

Assists the public in obtaining appropriate services.

INDEPENDENCE OF OPERATION

Agency Program Aides work under the supervision of technical or professional program managers. Aides exercise a considerable amount of independent judgment in performing duties. They are expected to apply various State and federal laws, procedures, rules, regulations, and guidelines that require interpretation. They independently prepare written summaries and reports and apply agency procedures in support of their specific program area.

COMPLEXITY

Agency Program Aides perform less complex professional activities that may closely resemble those performed by the professional staff. They are expected to understand the program area to which they are assigned and its mission and to provide input into its operations. Aides perform a variety of assignments that are of moderate difficulty. They must have the ability to determine independently the needs and priorities required to support professional and technical staff.

COMMUNICATION

Agency Program Aides have frequent communication with program staff, agency staff, staff of other local, State, and federal agencies, and members of the public regarding matters being handled by the agency. They are required to communicate orally or in writing with individuals who represent various local, State, and federal agencies, non-governmental agencies, and specific interest groups. Oral communication may be by telephone or face-to-face and may include speaking before groups of people to provide or gather information, give reports, or seek change. Written communication may be in the form of reports, charts, or general correspondence. The nature, frequency, and types of communication are determined by the program area to which the position is assigned. Communication with the general public may be required.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Agency Program Aide is not a supervisory class; however, positions may supervise clerical and/or technical employees by prioritizing work assignments for subordinate staff, assuring efficient and effective work flow, and training and evaluating staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Promotion: One year of permanent service in a position allocated to Grade 3 or higher.
