Classification Standard

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

          Associate in School Nursing advises school districts on the interpretation of the State Education Departments health policies. Incumbents in this class develop and update the Departments health policy and guidelines for school nurses, provide technical assistance to the field, collaborate and work with other State agencies, and State and local organizations on current and emerging school health issues, including HIV and AIDS.

These positions exist only in the State Education Department (SED).

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

          ASSOCIATE IN SCHOOL NURSING:  serves as resource expert in school nursing and school health program areas.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

Develops and updates SED health policies and guidelines for school nurses; provides technical assistance to nurses in the field as required by Education Law, Article 139; serves as the Departments liaison to the NYS Department of Health and other SED offices concerning current and emerging school health issues; responds to proposed legislation and develops regulations, guidelines and guidance documents regarding school health practices; works with the Office of Counsel to interpret and apply relevant laws, rules and regulations regarding school health issues; serves as the Departments liaison and resource expert in school nursing and school health program areas for local, regional, State and national school health care providers and policy setting groups, provides guidance on school health issues and serves as primary contact with SED; collaborates on a Statewide or regional basis with public and private organizations and agencies to address school health needs; monitors, interprets, synthesizes, and disseminates relevant information associated with changes in health and medical care, school nursing practice, legislative changes, and legal issues that impact schools; participates in State level public interagency/private partnerships to develop and coordinate school-based or school-linked services, represents school health services personnel in multi-disciplinary collaborations to address health problems that are barriers to student achievement; and assists in developing requests for proposals and contracts for the provision of school related health functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Open Competitive: Master's Degree, licensure and SED registration as a registered nurse, and five years of professional experience as a school health nurse (K-12) or community/health nurse.
