BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

Junior Engineers perform entry level professional engineering activities in a particular engineering specialty. These positions are usually assigned in agencies with significant engineering staff and programs.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

JUNIOR ENGINEER: entry level professional class; activities performed are generally regarded as developmental, so that Junior Engineers can progress to higher levels within an engineering specialty; work output is expected to be accurate and complete and follow engineering principles for the specialty; work performed under the direct supervision and control of higher level professional engineers, who closely review all assignments and completed work.

Junior Landscape Architects perform entry level professional landscape architectural activities under the direct supervision and control of higher level landscape architects.

The Engineering Technician series performs technical activities to support the work of engineering programs and professional engineering staff.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

JUNIOR ENGINEER: under the direct supervision of higher level professional engineering staff, plans and designs small projects or parts of larger projects; participates in engineering planning, design, and construction teams by planning and designing elements of projects, gathering and analyzing data, preparing specifications and estimates, and assisting in inspections; inspects work performed by contractors to assure that construction and rehabilitation is performed in accordance with contract specifications and engineering standards; reviews contract proposals, bids, and contracts for compliance with engineering standards; assists in evaluating buildings, roads, bridges, recreational facilities, electrical and mechanical systems, treatment plants, plumbing systems, and other structures and systems to determine maintenance and rehabilitation needs, evaluate preventative maintenance programs, and develop requests for proposals; collects and analyzes information and data to determine the need for and scope of improvement projects, new projects, and redesign of existing structures and systems; documents work by taking measurements, preparing written reports, and completing reports and forms; meets with project sponsors and contractors to discuss and evaluate construction and maintenance programs; evaluates the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of water treatment and building environmental controls and systems; analyzes traffic information and designs highway safety or traffic operations improvement projects and traffic control plans, including assisting in the design and operation of advanced electronic, computer, and communications technologies; assists in inspecting utility and water plants to assure that they provide safe and adequate service at fair rates; and analyzes soil and materials to determine and evaluate characteristics and advise on design and construction projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

JUNIOR ENGINEER

Open Competitive: Bachelor's Degree or higher in an accredited engineering curriculum, or an engineering degree registered by the New York State Department of Education, or current registration as a New York State Professional Engineer.
