Classification Standard

NATURE OF WORK

A Drafting Technician performs drafting of limited scope and assists higher level technicians, architects or engineers in the preparation of working plans and detailed drawings portraying architectural and engineering ideas and information.

Positions in this class are located in several agencies with the largest number in the Department of Transportation, the Office of General Services, and the Thruway Authority.             

CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Drafting Technicians trace and copy finished drawings and make drawings of equipment, structures, and facilities involving easily visualized details which fit familiar patterns. Technicians select and utilize appropriate drafting tools, instruments, and materials and follow accepted drafting procedures and methods. Incumbents work under the supervision and direction of higher level technicians, engineers or architects who provide detailed instructions on new or unusual assignments including scale and other information needed to complete the assignment, with specific reference to appropriate technical materials and similar drawings done in the past.

Recurring work of a routine nature is assigned in terms of objectives and time frame, and is performed by incumbents with considerable independence. The supervisor is generally available for consultation and assistance in solving technical drafting problems.

Positions of Drafting Aide are the entrance level for the Drafting Technician Series characterized by the performance of drafting work under immediate supervision designed to develop the incumbents' drafting skills while performing productive assignments. Typically drafting procedures, methods, and techniques are specified and demonstrated, and detailed instructions are provided for each assignment. The work of the Drafting Aide is closely reviewed while in progress and upon completion.

Senior Drafting Technicians use a wide range of standard drafting techniques and procedures and technical reference materials in preparing drawings involving architectural including landscaping, mechanical, structural, civil engineering and electrical specializations. Incumbents characteristically prepare and assist in the preparation of complete sets of drawings of a variety of equipment and facilities from complete or rough sketches, and verbal and written information. A Senior Drafting Technician is a full performance level, and may function as a job captain on a project basis.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES, TASKS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Under supervision and direction, a Drafting Technician prepares and assists higher level technicians, architects or engineers in the preparation of drawings for architectural or engineering projects utilizing appropriate drafting tools and materials and following accepted drafting procedures and departmental policy.

• Prepares architectural or engineering drawings involving easily visualized details according to instructions and precedents.

• From sketches, draws floor plans of a building, determining the size, spacing, and arrangement of freehand lettering according to a given scale.

• Performs tracing and mechanical and hand lettering.

• As directed, makes simple mathematical computations using standardized tables and formulas.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Drafting Technicians have a close working relationship with their supervisors as well as with the other drafting positions working on a project. Typically, incumbents in this class do not deal with individuals outside of the assigned unit or program area.

NATURE OF SUPERVISION

A Drafting Technician is a non-supervisory class. Positions in this class are supervised by higher level drafting positions, architects or engineers who make assignments, establish work priorities and schedule, and provide assistance and technical guidance to incumbents. The work of the Drafting Technician is reviewed for accuracy, technical competence, adherence to instructions, and for neatness.

MACHINES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Drafting Technicians use standard drafting tools, instruments and materials and technical reference materials including but not limited to the T square, triangles, curves, compass, dividers, straight edges, engineering or architectural scales, lettering templates, and ruling pens and pencils.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Working knowledge of the standard drafting procedures and methods.

• Working knowledge of the care and use of the drafting instruments and materials.

• Working knowledge of the use of the standard technical reference materials used in drafting.

• Working knowledge of the commonly used drafting symbols and terminology used in preparing drawings.

• Basic knowledge of departmental policy relating to drafting activities.

• Ability to prepare drawings that are neat and accurate.

• Ability to print neatly and legibly both by freehand and with mechanical lettering devices.

• Ability to make simple mathematical computations utilizing standardized tables and formulas.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            One year of permanent service in a drafting or engineering technical position at or above Grade 5.
