Classification Standard
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS SERIES
Bacteriologists are professional positions, requiring specialized education and training that perform serological, molecular biological, cultural, and microscopic examinations to identify bacteria and other microorganisms present in laboratory specimens, and serologic tests for blood grouping and Rh determination. They may also assist in the production and evaluation of various diagnostic antigens of vaccines, toxins, toxoids, and immune sera. They may also perform bacteriologic examinations of water, milk, food, or other samples concerned with sanitation, and may assist in research.
At the higher levels, positions are characterized by the independence with which incumbents work and by the difficult nature of their research in relatively unexplored areas. Classification at these higher levels is frequently made in recognition of contributions in the field of laboratory research by the incumbents.
Positions are classified in the laboratories of the Departments of Health and Agriculture and Markets.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
BACTERIOLOGIST: entry level professional; directs a unit engaged in microbiological examinations, or assists in research by performing specific phases of the research, or produces and standardizes various biological preparations; may supervise laboratory technical and support staff.
SENIOR BACTERIOLOGIST: assists in planning major laboratory research projects or directs a unit engaged in a variety of cultural and microscopic examinations of human tissues; or directs development, production and standardization of diagnostic reagents and vaccines, toxins, toxoids and immune sera.
ASSOCIATE BACTERIOLOGIST: plans and conducts advanced research involving the direction of the professional and technical work of subordinate staff.
ASSOCIATE BACTERIOLOGIST (VIROLOGY): under general supervision directs diagnostic program for viral and rickettsial infections.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
BACTERIOLOGIST: under the general direction of higher level professional staff, conducts a variety of tests to determine the presence and identity of microorganisms; cultures, isolates, identifies, controls the growth, and determines the drug susceptibility of bacteria and bacteria byproducts; produces and standardizes immune sera, vaccines, toxins, toxoids, and other biological preparations and reagents; conducts bacteriological examination of samples of blood and other body fluids, water, milk, food and other fluids and substances to determine the presence, identity, and quantity of bacteria or other microorganisms; develops media and studies physical conditions favorable to the growth of microorganisms; performs molecular biology and molecular techniques to identify and modify bacteria and other microorganisms; directs and may supervise technical staff assigned to the examination of samples; records the results of examinations and prepares reports and forms to identify and describe examination methods and results of testing; sets up, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment used for bacteriological examinations; assists in research projects by performing literature and database searches, assisting in conducting procedures, conducting microbiological procedures, and assisting in the preparation of materials for publication; assists in the regulation of laboratories by preparing and distributing proficiency test samples; conducts microbiological procedures using the techniques of molecular biology genetics, immunology, and biochemistry; assists in the completion of tests required to maintain laboratory certification; answers questions from clinical laboratories and the public; and trains students and personnel in laboratory procedures.
SENIOR BACTERIOLOGIST: under general supervision, performs and assists in planning major laboratory research projects or directs a unit performing a wide variety of cultural and microscopic examinations of specimens of human tissues and fluids for identification of pathogenic microorganisms; or directs the development, production, and standardization of the diagnostic reagents and vaccines, toxins, toxoids, and immune sera: directs the cultural and microscopic examination of body fluids and tissues in the identification of pathogenic microorganisms including tests for parasitic and mycotic agents and other types of diagnostic laboratory procedures; directs the development, production, and standardization of related diagnostic reagents and vaccines, toxins, toxoids, and immune sera; collaborates with laboratory physicians, bacteriologists, and biochemists in planning studies; prepares reports and publications.
ASSOCIATE BACTERIOLOGIST: under administrative direction, plans and conducts advanced research in bacteriology or immunology usually involving the direction of the professional and technical work of a number of subordinates; plans and schedules work assignments of technical work of a number of subordinates; plans and schedules work assignments of technical staff in performing bacteriologic and serologic diagnostic tests; reviews clinical histories submitted with specimens and related reports of results of tests on such specimens; plans and directs a program of production and standardization of new diagnostic reagents and vaccines, toxins, toxoids, immune sera and related biologic products; plans and supervises programs concerned with hematologic diagnostic methods; directs the production and standardization of blood grouping and Rh type sera; plans and supervises studies in related methodology; directs and develops original research; plans and directs comprehensive training programs for new technicians and professional subordinates; consults and collaborates with colleagues in other branches of science; prepares reports and publications.
ASSOCIATE BACTERIOLOGIST (VIROLOGY): with the Assistant Director of the laboratories for Virology directs the diagnostic program for viral and rickettsial infections: provides administrative assistance to the Director; participates in, assists in evaluation of, and supervises the technical portion of research projects devoted to the isolation and identification of viruses and rickettsial, conducts research in virological tissue culture techniques; establishes, standardizes and maintains the virus and antigen strains necessary for diagnostic and research purposes.

NOTE: Classification Standards illustrate the nature, extent and scope of duties and responsibilities of the classes they describe. Standards cannot and do not include all of the work that might be appropriately performed by a class. The minimum qualifications above are those which were required for appointment at the time the Classification Standard was written. Please contact the Division of Staffing Services for current information on minimum qualification requirements for appointment or examination.
