Classification Standard

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS SERIES

Positions in this series are engaged in laboratory illustration, computer production, and photography, medical illustration, or medical illustration and photography.  Illustrations and photographs prepared illustrate scientific articles and research studies, depict pathologic conditions, portray the course of a disease, illustrate surgical methods and techniques, delineate laboratory apparatus and medical equipment, and serve similar objectives.  Illustrations may be made from direct observation, including microscopic examination and attendance at surgical operations, from textbook descriptions, or from a scientists research notes and verbal directions.  Completed work is subject to approval by professional staff in terms of accuracy and attention to detail.

            These positions are classified at the Department of Health and at SUNY Buffalos Health Science Center.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Medical Illustrator Photographer:  entry level; make illustrations, designs, diagrams, models, and charts; and take photographs to illustrate medical and surgical findings.

Senior Laboratory Illustrator Photographer:  advanced performance and/or first supervisory level; engage in and supervise the portrayal of laboratory specimens, findings, and procedures by means of photography, computer production, or illustration, for use in scientific publications, lectures, and as teaching aids.

Associate Medical Illustrator Photographer:  second supervisory level; supervise the combined photographic, computer production, and illustration services at a large teaching and medical research center, personally performing the most difficult illustration work.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

MEDICAL ILLUSTRATOR PHOTOGRAPHER:  make pen, ink, and halftone drawings from microscopic observation; make detailed perspective drawings of complex anatomic structures; make full color reproductions of research subjects and surgical operations and procedures for displays and exhibits; make drawings of laboratory and medical apparatus; and work from specimens and technical scientific and medical writings with interpretation from scientific and medical personnel.

SENIOR LABORATORY ILLUSTRATOR PHOTOGRAPHER:  advise scientists on the most appropriate method of illustration; assign work to, advise, and review the work of a small group of photographers engaged in taking, developing, printing, and enlarging photographs and photomicrographs; personally engage in the more difficult work of this nature; personally prepare illustrations of such things as laboratory apparatus and procedures, cellular structures, bacteria, pathogenic conditions, and the like, generally working from microphotographs and/or discussions with and sketches provided by, research personnel; prepare various types of computer production; and create the layout for exhibits for use at health conferences, medical meetings, and for general public information.

ASSOCIATE MEDICAL ILLUSTRATOR PHOTOGRAPHER:  on the basis of plans and rough manuscripts, advise physicians and scientists on the most appropriate methods of illustration and on general layout of scientific publications, and may be responsible for accomplishing such layout; review and assign all order for illustration, computer production, exhibits, photography, photomicrography, and video and review completed work for quality and conformance with the job order; assure that necessary art and photographic supplies and equipment are on hand; arrange for the showing of videos and slides;  and personally perform advanced medical and laboratory illustration work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Medical Illustrator Photographer

Open Competitive:  three years of full time paid experience in the preparation of illustrations and photographs of medical, laboratory, and scientific subjects; or Bachelors Degree in art from a regionally accredited college or university and one year of the experience as listed above.

Senior Laboratory Illustrator Photographer

Open Competitive:  five years of experience in the preparation of illustrations and photographs of laboratory and scientific subjects.  A Bachelors Degree in art or in an appropriate science may be substituted for two years of experience.

Associate Medical Illustrator Photographer

Open Competitive:  seven years of experience in the preparation of illustrations and photographs of medical laboratory, and scientific subjects.  A Bachelors Degree in art or in an appropriate science may be substituted for two years of experience.  Training in a recognized school of medical illustration or completion of a course in gross anatomy of the medical school type and level will be accepted in lieu of experience on a year-for-year basis.
