Classification Standard
These employees inspect or supervise the inspection of kosher foods to determine compliance with the Penal Law and the Agriculture and Markets Law. The work requires knowledge of the Hebrew Language and of Orthodox Jewish religious requirements regarding the slaughter and preparation of kosher meats and foods. Inspections are made according to fixed schedules and as a result of specific complaints. Employees may work evenings or weekends to secure evidence of violation. Positions which inspect non-kosher foods are classified as Food Inspector 1, Occ. Code 6410210.
KOSHER FOOD INSPECTOR 1 inspects retail and wholesale food establishments engaged in the slaughter, manufacture, preparation, distribution and sale of kosher foods to enforce the Penal Law and the Agriculture and Markets Law; verifies the identification of meat labeled as Kosher; secures pertinent evidence that would constitute a violation of labeling laws; may assist in investigating complaints regarding fraud and misrepresentation in the sale of kosher foods; monitors prices of kosher and non-kosher foods and the variance on comparable items; and testifies in court as an expert witness and aids the prosecutor in the interpretation of the law. QUALIFICATIONS: Although competitive examinations are not held for this class, candidates must have three years of experience in the inspection of meats prepared according to Orthodox Hebrew religious requirements, including one year in the inspection of the manufacture, distribution, and sale of kosher meats and non-meat foods.
KOSHER FOOD INSPECTOR 2 supervises and evaluates work of Kosher Food Inspectors 1 in the inspection of wholesale food establishments engaged in the slaughter, manufacture, preparation, distribution and sale of kosher foods; reviews all written reports submitted by subordinates such as inspection reports, expense vouchers, and accrual reports; conducts more sensitive types of inspections and may be required to work on special investigations as assigned by the Director of Kosher Law Enforcement. QUALIFICATIONS: Although competitive examinations are not held, for this class, candidates must have had one year of experience as a Kosher Food Inspector 1.
