New York State Department Of Civil Service

Classification Standard

NATURE OF WORK

A Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisor 1 supervises motor equipment mechanics and other positions in an automotive repair shop engaged in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered, self-propelled and non-self-propelled motor driven vehicles and equipment.

Positions in this class are located in several agencies with the greatest number in the NYS Thruway Authority, the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

CLASSIFICATION CRITERIA AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

A Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisor 1 is a working supervisor of a staff of ten or more subordinates including skilled, semiskilled and relatively unskilled positions performing tasks involving or related to automotive and equipment maintenance and repair. Typically, at least two of the subordinate positions are journey-level. In instances where a shop contains fewer than ten subordinate positions, but a higher ratio of skilled to semiskilled and unskilled positions, a Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisor 1 position may be classified based on scope and complexity of repairs performed. Incumbents assign staff, plan and direct work, provide instruction and assistance, and inspect work.

Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisor 3 positions supervise and provide technical direction to a staff performing maintenance and repairs, production coordination and scheduling, parts and record keeping, and support services operations for all motor driven equipment and motor vehicles assigned to a Department of Transportation regional equipment maintenance shop, or to a motor equipment maintenance operation of equivalent size.

As required, Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisors 1 perform the activities and tasks listed in the Classification Standard for Motor Equipment Mechanic, Occ. Code 7312000.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS

Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisors 1 have frequent oral communications with staff supervised in assigning work and giving instructions, with the supervisor when receiving assignments and resolving work and schedule problems, and occasionally with motor vehicle equipment operators to determine the nature and extent of damage and symptoms related to the mechanical, electrical or hydraulic malfunction. Incumbents may have oral communications with vendors providing materials, equipment and service to the organization to insure adherence to warranty and contract specifications. Written reports of work performed and labor and materials used may be prepared for the supervisor. Written and oral communications with the general public are not typical of this class.

NATURE OF SUPERVISION

Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisors 1 are supervised by higher level trades or administrative positions who assign work and provide work schedules and priorities. Technical repair and parts manuals are provided for the motor vehicle and equipment work done.

Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisors 1 supervise subordinate motor equipment maintenance employees by making assignments, giving instructions and assistance, and observing and inspecting work performed to insure that instructions have been followed, that the quality of the work is satisfactory, and that work schedules are met.

MACHINES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisors 1 use mechanicsÂ’ hand tools, such as socket set and ratchet handles, pliers, hammers, wrenches and screwdrivers, and power tools, along with engine analyzers and other test equipment used to diagnose and locate the cause of faulty mechanical or electrical performance.
