BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS SERIES

Traffic Signal Mechanics operate a variety of equipment to maintain, repair and replace the traffic control signals located on State highways. They are on call 24 hours a day, seven days per week and generally spend the majority of their work time in the field. These positions are classified in the regional operations of the Department of Transportation.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

All positions are in the non-competitive jurisdictional class.

ASSISTANT TRAFFIC SIGNAL MECHANIC: second level in the title series; work under general supervision of higher level Traffic Signal Mechanics.

TRAFFIC SIGNAL MECHANIC: journey-level; work independently and frequently alone; may supervise and train Assistant Traffic Signal Mechanics and Traffic Signal Helpers.

SUPERVISING TRAFFIC SIGNAL MECHANIC: supervisory level; responsible for entire traffic signal system in a Department of Transportation region or sub-region; supervises staff of eight to fifteen subordinates.

RELATED CLASSES

Positions in the Bridge Repair Series perform a number of trades in the repair and maintenance of bridges.

Highway Maintenance Workers 1 and 2 operate a variety of self-propelled equipment to maintain and repair highway pavements, shoulders, roadsides, drainage, traffic signs, and pavement markings and to control snow and ice.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

ASSISTANT TRAFFIC SIGNAL MECHANIC: under general supervision of Traffic Signal Mechanics, troubleshoots and repairs traffic signals, interconnected traffic signal systems, and navigation lights; re-lamps traffic signals; installs microcomputers and cabinet, signal heads and hardware, and signal poles; and performs routine vehicle maintenance, such as changing engine oil and filter, lubricating chassis, and changing tires.

TRAFFIC SIGNAL MECHANIC: programs traffic signal microprocessor computers; troubleshoots and repairs state-of-the-art Intelligent Transportation System Devices such as video surveillance systems, variable message signs, and fiber-optic signs; inspects traffic signal systems installed by private contractors to ensure conformance to standards; performs major modifications, such as re-timing and adding signals to existing traffic signal systems; prepares legal documents which define the operations of traffic control devices; reviews and modifies design plans for new and modified traffic signals and equipment; and maintains database of repair records and equipment condition.

SUPERVISING TRAFFIC SIGNAL MECHANIC: under the general supervision of a Civil Engineer 1, supervises traffic signal maintenance and repair staff in a Department of Transportation region, including preparing performance evaluations, reviewing attendance, and approving time off; assigns, schedules, and coordinates traffic signal crews; develops signal re-lamping and preventive maintenance schedules; ensures that agency mandates, such as Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and drug and alcohol testing, are carried out; coordinates activities with other divisions and programs; and advises and assists local municipalities with the operation of their traffic signal equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

ASSISTANT TRAFFIC SIGNAL MECHANIC

Promotion: one year of service as a Traffic Signal Helper.

Non-competitive: possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License and meet the current NYS DOT "Acceptable" Health requirements for the position of Laborer and one year of experience assisting in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal devices or two years' experience in the repair and maintenance of electronic equipment, one year of which must have included work on solid state and microprocessor based equipment or components.

TRAFFIC SIGNAL MECHANIC

Promotion: one year of service as an Assistant Traffic Signal Mechanic.

Non-competitive: possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement and three years of experience assisting in the installation, repair and maintenance of traffic signal devices or three years of journey-level experience in the repair and maintenance of electronic equipment, one year of which must have included work on solid state and microprocessor based equipment or components.

SUPERVISING TRAFFIC SIGNAL MECHANIC

Promotion: one year of permanent service as a Traffic Signal Mechanic.
