Classification Standard

 

 

            These positions function as technical equipment specialists in the Convention and Arts Center of the Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza in Albany and, in this capacity, are responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, repair, modification, and use of all lighting and sound equipment in the Center’s meeting rooms, theaters, and the Convention Center.  These positions are located only in the Office of General Services.

 

            CONVENTION AND ARTS CENTER LIGHTING AND SOUND ASSISTANT, under the direction of the Convention and Arts Center Lighting and Sound Supervisor, the position performs technical lighting and sound operations for small user groups or assists higher level specialists in coordinating technical lighting and sound operations for major events; sets up and  operates lighting and sound equipment for theatrical performances and special events; assists in or performs preventive maintenance and repairs to equipment; conducts tours of facilities for users and prospective users to demonstrate and explain the lighting, sound, and state equipment; and oversees operation of equipment by user groups.  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Completion of a two year electrical trades course and six months’ experience in operating complex lighting and sound systems at a large performing arts facility.

 

            CONVENTION AND ARTS CENTER LIGHTING AND SOUND TECHNICIAN, under the direction of the Convention and Arts Center Lighting and Sound Supervisor, the position directs and coordinates lighting and sound operations in the Convention and Arts Center by providing technical advice and assistance to users about lighting, sound, and special effects and developing operational plans to meet user needs, assisting users and prospective users in determining the appropriateness of the facilities and equipment to meet their needs, and supervising the technical operations of users; repairs, maintains, and modifies technical electronic equipment and electrical systems specialized for theatrical use; assists in reviewing specifications and capability of equipment considered for purchase and makes recommendations based on specialized needs, adaptability of equipment to existing equipment and systems, and quality of equipment; assists in inspecting and assembling equipment upon its receipt and tests it to assure it meets needs and specifications; evaluates the technical ability of user groups to operate equipment and supervises their use of such equipment; performs all technical operations for State functions and for user groups lacking technical support staff; designs specialized lighting and sound plans for users and operates the system; makes emergency repairs and modifications during productions; and assists in adapting equipment and preparing cost evaluations for replacement of equipment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  A four year degree in technical theater or design, or four years of experience in the operation of complex lighting and sound systems at a large performing arts center, or a combination of training and experience as described above equal to four years.

 

            CONVENTION AND ARTS CENTER LIGHTING AND SOUND SUPERVISOR, directs and coordinates the technical systems for the Convention and Arts Center and supervises subordinate staff in the performance of their duties:  develops a maintenance schedule and supervises and performs repairs and preventive maintenance on lighting, sound, and stage equipment and systems; confers and arranges with the Empire State Plaza Operations group for skilled, semiskilled, and unskilled trades workers needed to set up facilities for events and performances; trains subordinate staff to set up and operates the specialized lighting, sound, and theatrical equipment in the Center; assigns staff to specific events and oversees and inspects their work; programs computerized lighting and sound equipment to provide automatically, by cue, the appropriate effects;  serves as primary contact with users and prospective users regarding technical effects to determine user needs and to explain technical capabilities and limitations of Center equipment; evaluates users’ technical capabilities to use equipment and authorizes the use of equipment by user technical support staff; designs lighting, sound, and other effects for user groups; evaluates equipment failure and recommends replacement parts and equipment; inspects and assembles new equipment and recommends return of equipment; evaluates possible purchases for adaptability to existing systems, quality, and ability to meet specialized needs; modifies existing equipment to adapt to user and facility needs; makes emergency repairs and modifications to equipment during performances; and performs cost evaluations of existing equipment and recommends replacing it.  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Open Competitive:  A four year degree in technical theater and design and one year of experience in the operation of complex lighting and sound systems at a large performing arts facility.  Promotional:  Two years’ permanent experience as a Convention and Arts Center Lighting and Sound Technician.
