Classification Standard

NATURE OF WORK

            DHSES Training Extras portray a variety of roles in exercise simulations targeted to law enforcement, including specialized teams such as SWAT, and other first responder personnel for emergency situation preparations. 

            These positions exist only at the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES).

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

DHSES Training Extras function as actors in exercise simulations to ensure the readiness of New York States law enforcement and emergency personnel to respond to natural, technological and terrorism related disasters.   The exercises may include hundreds of participants with simulated gun fire, explosions, serious vehicular accidents, hostage situations, infrastructure disaster, and traumatic or fatal injury.  

Illustrative Duties

            DHSES Training Extras participate in various exercises incorporating real-life scenarios, and portray such roles as aggressor, perpetrator, terrorist, or a non-combatant who is assigned a specific role such as hostage, victim, bystander or an endangered citizen;  follow instructions and physically maintain positions for long periods of time, wearing clothing or gear that relates to the assigned role; operate equipment, including simulated firearms and weaponry, as directed; and participate in post-exercise interviews and debriefings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Non-Competitive:  Must be physically able to perform the duties of the assigned role and be able to understand and follow directions in English.  When asked to operate a motor vehicle, must possess the appropriate NYS motor vehicle drivers license.

Note:  The minimum qualifications and duties for each role vary according to the specific nature of the simulation, and the role required of the training extra.
