Classification Standard

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

 

          Deputy Superintendents of Correctional Health Care Facility are responsible for the administration of outpatient primary and specialty health care programs and management of an inpatient Regional Medical Unit (RMU).  Incumbents act as the chief health care administrator of the facility to which they are assigned; formulate, organize, and establish a system of primary health care for inmate patients; coordinate and review all programmatic activities related to inmates’ health care within the facility; provide overall direction to facility staff relating to the primary Health Service Program and Specialty Care Unit; assist in the preparation of information for the Health Services Program budget; serve as member of the Superintendent’s Executive Team; assume management responsibility in the absence of the facility’s Superintendent, and serve as a member or chairman of various committees. 

 

          These positions are classified in the Regional Medical Units (RMU) of the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS).

DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT OF CORRECTIONAL HEALTH CARE FACILITY: non-competitive; management level; responsible for overall administration and management of a regional medical unit.

 

RELATED CLASSES

 

Deputy Superintendent for Administrative Services, Deputy Superintendent for Security Services, Deputy Superintendent for Program Services, and Deputy Superintendent for Reception and Classification, also work under the direction of a Superintendent of Correctional Facility and are responsible for the administration, security, programming, and classification functions at a correctional facility.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

Acts as chief health care administrator of a Regional Medical Unit.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Serves as the senior administrative person responsible to the Superintendent for all things health related.  Formulates, organizes, and establishes a system of primary health care for inmates at a correctional facility and regional medical unit, and, under the direction of the Deputy Commissioner/Chief Medical Officer, oversees delivery of specialty care services for inmates from multiple facilities.

 

         

 

 

 

 

 

 

Coordinates and reviews all programmatic activities relating to inmates’ health care in a correctional facility.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Assists in the preparation of information for the Health Services Program budget at the facility, and manages and controls the Health Services Fiscal Action Plan for their facility.

 

 

 

 

Assumes management responsibility of an absent Superintendent.

 

 

 

 

 

Serves as a member of the facility’s Executive Committee.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotion:  three years of experience in DOCCS, including one year of experience in a health care management position allocated to Grade 22 or higher (this includes such titles as Assistant Director Correctional Health Services or Correctional Regional Health Services Administrator); or three years of experience in DOCCS in a health-related position allocated to Grade 20 or higher.
