MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: On or before the date of the written test, you must have:

For Number 23-881, Forestry Technician 1:

  1. 30 semester college credit hours, including or supplemented by 12 semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: forest biology, silviculture, forest mensuration, forest protection, forest soils, dendrology, botany and land surveying. (see Note 4.), OR
  2. One year of diversified, technical forestry experience in two or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery operation, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.

(Examples of Non-Qualifying Experience: cutting, skidding and hauling of timber products; application of pesticides; fire-line work; garden center work; or weeding of seed beds.)

For Number 23-882, Forestry Technician 2:

  1. An associate's or higher-level degree in forestry, forest biology, forest resource management or forest technology, OR
  2. 60 semester college credit hours, including or supplemented by 30 semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: forest biology, silviculture, forest mensuration, forest protection, forest soils, dendrology, botany and land surveying. (see Note 4.)

NOTES:

  1. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a prorated basis.
  2. New York State residence is not required.
  3. Your degree and/or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. If your degree and/or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to the Examination Information Desk of the Department of Civil Service for a list of acceptable companies who provide this service. This information is also available here. You must pay the required course by course evaluation fee.
  4. If you qualify for either examination on the basis of having semester college credit hours, you must include, with your application, a list of courses in forestry which you have satisfactorily completed. Applications submitted without a list of relevant courses WILL BE disapproved.
  5. If you expect to complete the educational requirements by June 30, 2002, you can be admitted to this examination. If you pass the written test, you must submit proof of completion of the education requirements to the interviewer at the time of the employment interview.
  6. Some of the duties of these positions are physically demanding. For example, appointees may be required to snow shoe, cross-country ski, and perform other physically demanding duties in adverse weather.
  7. As this position requires considerable travel, appointees will be required to operate a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.
  8. If eligible, you may compete in both examinations, by filing one application listing both examination numbers and titles. The appropriate processing fee must be filed for each.

THE POSITIONS: These positions exist in the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Forestry Technician 1 positions are located in Belmont and Saratoga. Currently there is one vacancy in Belmont. Forestry Technician 2 positions are at various locations throughout the State. Currently there are Forestry Technician 2 vacancies in Cortland, Herkimer, Lowville, Canton and New Paltz.

DUTIES: As a Forestry Technician 1, you would perform a variety of technical assignments, generally under the supervision of higher-level technicians. You would assist in insect and disease management programs, timber stand improvement, nursery culture of trees and shrubs, forest management projects, construction and boundary line maintenance, continuous forest inventory and forest product sales.

As a Forestry Technician 2, you would perform duties similar to those described for Forestry Technician 1. In addition, you would routinely supervise the operations of work crews in one of the technical assignments and prepare written reports.

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION: There will be a written test which you must pass in order to be considered for appointment. The written test is designed to test for knowledge, skills and/or abilities in such areas as:

For BOTH Examinations Number 23-881 AND Number 23-882:

  1. Forestry, including elementary forest surveying, preparation and interpretation of maps, tree identification, tools and equipment, forest nursery operations, and forest management
  2. Forest inventory and basic forest mensuration
  3. Forest maintenance, including control of disease and insects

In addition for Examination Number 23-882:

  1. Supervision
  2. Preparation of written material
