Minimum Qualifications

On or before December 1, 2007, you must have a bachelor's degree and eight years of experience developing and implementing domestic and/or foreign tourism marketing programs. At least two years of this experience must have been in a managerial capacity with direct responsibility for a major marketing, advertising, or related promotional program related to tourism development.

Substitution

A master's degree in business administration, marketing, or tourism and hospitality management may be substituted for one year of the general experience.

Non-Qualifying Experience

Experience as a travel agent or travel/reservation customer service representative will NOT be considered qualifying.

Notes

  1. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a prorated basis.
  2. New York State residency is not required.
  3. Your degree or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. If your degree or college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to the Examination Information Desk of the Department of Civil Service for a list of acceptable companies who provide this service. You must pay the required evaluation fee. If you are applying on the Internet, you must mail the independent verification of equivalency to the New York State Department of Civil Service, Alfred E. Duties

As a Tourism Trade Specialist 3, you would plan, develop, implement and budget for domestic and international tourism marketing programs; provide technical advice and assistance to Regional Tourism Coordinators, regional and local public sector, and not-for-profit tourism officials and executives of private sector attractions on developing marketing programs; supervise contractual marketing and/or public relations consultants; and establish and maintain high-level contacts with the international and domestic travel industry and trade press.

Subject of Examination

There will be no written test. The test will consist of an evaluation of your education and experience. When you apply, you must provide complete information to show that you meet the minimum qualifications. Do NOT send resumes. If you apply using the OC-APP form and you need more space, attach additional 8??" x 11" sheets following the same format used on the application form. Additional unsolicited information will not be accepted after the last date for filing.

If you meet the Minimum Qualifications you will be sent a supplemental questionnaire to complete and return. The questionnaire will be used to evaluate your education and professional experience in relation to: program and administrative activities related to tourism marketing, technical assistance and training in the industry, collaboration and communication with tourism industry contacts and press, and management of subordinate and contractual staff.

Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits to your final passing score.
