Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester Counties will receive an additional $3,026 annual downstate adjustment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

On or before May 16, 2015, you must have

For Exam Number 25-967: Two years of experience in the construction, reconstruction, maintenance, or rehabilitation of bridges* AND one year of experience in bridge, highway or waterway construction, reconstruction, maintenance, rehabilitation, or inspection.**

For Exam Number 25-968: Three years of experience in the construction, reconstruction, maintenance, or rehabilitation of bridges* AND two years of experience in bridge, highway or waterway construction, reconstruction, maintenance, rehabilitation, or inspection.** One of the five years of experience required MUST include at least ONE YEAR as a supervisor.

*Experience in construction of sewers, roads, parking lots, and buildings will not be considered as qualifying experience.

**Substitutions: These substitution options can only be applied to the experience required in bridge, highway or waterway construction, reconstruction, maintenance, rehabilitation, or inspection.

Either A. college coursework in carpentry, masonry, welding, or in a program leading to a degree in construction technology may be substituted for non-supervisory experience on the basis of 30 semester credit hours equaling one year of general experience.

Or B. a diploma or certificate of completion from a post-secondary trade school, apprenticeship program, military construction specialty school (documented completion of US Army 14 Week Corp of Engineers ���Field 12��� One Station or more advanced training, or equivalent or more advanced construction skills training by over US military branches), or trade school in carpentry, masonry, welding, or construction can be substituted for a maximum of one year of non-supervisory experience. High school BOCES or VO-TECH courses are NOT qualifying.

  2. License Requirement: At the time of appointment, and continually thereafter, you will be required to have a valid New York State Class A or B Commercial Driver���s License with no air brake restriction.
  3. Your degree, college credit, diploma or certificate of completion from a Post-secondary trade school, apprenticeship program, military vocational school, or trade school in carpentry, masonry, welding, or construction, must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or educational institution recognized by NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. If your college credit was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to the Examination Information Desk of NYS Department of Civil Service for a list of acceptable companies who provide this service. You must pay the required evaluation fee. If you are applying on the Internet, you must mail the independent verification of equivalency to the NYS Department of Civil Service, Albany, New York 12239. Attention: S2SEH.
  4. Appointees to this position will be required to satisfactorily complete the ���one-person plowing��� certification program which the Department of Transportation will offer during the probationary period.
  5. Promotion examinations are also being held for these positions. If you are eligible for appointment from a promotion list, you may not be appointed from the list resulting from these examinations open to the public.
  6. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a prorated basis.
  7. New York State residence is not required.

DUTIES

As a Bridge Repair Supervisor 1, you would assist in the overall supervision of the skilled and unskilled workers who maintain and repair both high and low level bridges. You would coordinate the activities of various sized work crews according to project needs and be responsible for adherence to schedules, as well as all appropriate safety requirements. You might perform duties related to the preventative and regular maintenance, repair, replacement, reconstruction, inspection, and rehabilitation of bridges assigned to the crew. You would also perform the duties of a Bridge Repair Supervisor 2 in his/her absence. You will be required to supervise and/or perform snow and ice control activities.

As a Bridge Repair Supervisor 2, you would plan, organize, and schedule the activities of bridge repair crews. You would estimate materials, equipment, and labor requirements and prepare reports on programs and accomplishments. You may assist in condition inspections of bridges. You will be required to supervise and/or perform snow and ice control activities.

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION

There will be a written test which you must pass in order to be considered for appointment. The written test is designed to test for knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as: For Examination Numbers

1. Bridge reconstruction, maintenance and repair - These questions test for knowledge of the proper methods, materials, and equipment used in the upkeep of bridges and bridge abutments, including concrete and pavement maintenance; protective sealants and waterproofing; scour protection; steel maintenance, sandblasting, painting, and welding; environmental and worker protection safeguards; inspection principles and procedures; and snow and ice removal and control. 2. Safety practices - These questions test for knowledge of and the ability to apply safety principles related to construction and maintenance work zones, including traffic control, the safe use of equipment, and the overall safety of workers, the traveling public, and the work environment. X X
3. Understanding and interpreting plans, specifications, and technical instructions - These questions test for the ability to comprehend, analyze, and perform computations based on technical drawings and written presentations related to construction and maintenance projects. All the information needed to answer the questions will be provided in the written material and/or drawings. X X
4. Mathematics, including areas and volumes - These questions test for the ability to perform calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division and will include the use of fractions, decimals, and percentages and the calculation of the perimeter, area, and volume of geometric shapes. X X
5. Scheduling work and equipment - These questions test for knowledge of work scheduling principles and for the ability to arrange work and equipment assignments in a manner that will achieve work goals while staying within scheduling criteria. This may include setting up vacation or work schedules taking into consideration such factors as seniority, work skills, duty hours, and shift coverage.   X
6. Supervision - These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices employed in planning, organizing, and controlling the activities of a work unit toward predetermined objectives. The concepts covered, usually in a situational question format, include such topics as assigning and reviewing work; evaluating performance; maintaining work standards; motivating and developing subordinates; implementing procedural change; increasing efficiency; and dealing with problems of absenteeism, morale, and discipline. 7. Administrative supervision - These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in directing the activities of a large subordinate staff, including subordinate supervisors. Questions relate to the personal interactions between an upper level supervisor and his/her subordinate supervisors in the accomplishment of objectives. These questions cover such areas as assigning work to and coordinating the activities of several units, establishing and guiding staff development programs, evaluating the performance of subordinate supervisors, and maintaining relationships with other organizational sections.   X

Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits to your final passing score.
