Your admission notice will tell you where and when you are scheduled to appear. You cannot request a day in advance or change your scheduled day.

Minimum Qualifications

On or before March 3, 2018, you must have had five years of experience as an electrician supervising the operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment used to operate movable structures for transportation and/or water level control systems related to transportation.

Notes

  1. A promotion examination is also being held for these positions. If you are eligible for appointment from a promotion list, you may not be appointed in your own agency from the list resulting from this examination open to the public.
  2. You must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter.
  3. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a prorated basis.
  4. New York State residence is not required.

These positions exist in the New York State Canal Corporation in Albion, Fonda, Fort Edward, Lyons, Syracuse, Utica, and Waterford.

Duties

As a Canal Electrical Supervisor, you would supervise employees in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic equipment of locks, movable dams, motors, lift bridges, guard gates, and other equipment on an assigned section of a canal. You would make periodic inspections of the equipment and instruct bridge and lock operators in proper methods of operation and maintenance; test generators and motors; repair and supervise repairs to electrical equipment, instruments, and hydraulic turbines on both stationary and floating plants; and investigate accidents. You may also perform activities in support of the collection of user fees.

Subject of Examination

There will be a written test which you must pass in order to be considered for appointment. The written test is designed to test for knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:

  1. Electrical principles, machinery, tools and wiring - These questions test for knowledge of basic electrical principles, the proper operation of electrical machinery, tools used in electrical work, and proper electrical wiring procedures.
  2. Mechanical principles, equipment and tools - These questions test for knowledge of general mechanical principles and may include such areas as tool identification and typical use, operating characteristics of mechanical equipment, and proper maintenance of mechanical equipment.
  3. Work Planning and Scheduling - These questions test for knowledge of the principles used in developing and implementing work plans and for the ability to arrange work assignments in a manner that will achieve work goals while staying within scheduling criteria. This may include setting up vacation or work schedules, taking into consideration such factors as seniority, work skills, duty hours, and shift coverage.
  4. Construction, operation, maintenance, testing and repair of canal mechanical, hydraulic and electrical equipment - These questions test for knowledge of the characteristics and operating procedures of the canal locks, lift bridges and other structures on the New York State Canal System and the mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic principles involved in the testing, maintenance, and repair of the equipment used on these structures.
  5. Administrative supervision - These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in directing the activities of a large subordinate staff, including subordinate supervisors. Questions relate to the personal interactions between an upper level supervisor and his/her subordinate supervisors in the accomplishment of objectives. These questions cover such areas as assigning work to and coordinating the activities of several units, establishing and guiding staff development programs, evaluating the performance of subordinate supervisors, and maintaining relationships with other organizational sections.

Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime Veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits to your final passing score.

Notice to appear for the test may be conditional as review of applications may not be made until after the test.
