Your admission notice will tell you where and when you are scheduled to appear. You cannot request a day in advance or change your scheduled day.

Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester Counties will receive an additional $3,026 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange, or Putnam Counties will receive an additional $1,513 annual mid-Hudson adjustment.

Minimum Qualifications

On or before March 17, 2018, you must have a bachelor?s or higher-level degree in engineering, geochemistry, geology, geophysics, or geosciences.**

In addition, for No. 26-474 you must have had one year of professional-level experience in drilling, development, or production for oil, gas, solution mining, or underground gas storage.

**For purposes of this examination, NON-qualifying degrees include but are not limited to: agriculture, agronomy, biology, botany, chemistry, environmental science, environmental studies, forestry, geography, horticulture, hydrology, landscape architecture, mathematics, and physics.

Experience in the drilling, development, and production of water wells is NOT qualifying.

If you expect to meet the educational requirements by September 30, 2018, you can be admitted to the written test, but you cannot be considered for appointment until you submit proof of successful completion of the educational requirement to the Appointing Authority at the time of the employment interview. Failure to meet the educational requirements by September 30, 2018 may result in your removal from the eligible list.

  1. Travel Requirements: Appointment to these positions requires travel. Appointees to these positions are required to operate a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job. If the position requires that you operate a motor vehicle, you must possess a drivers license valid in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter. Travel expenses are reimbursed on a fixed schedule.
  2. Your degree must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to the Examination Information Desk of the NYS Department of Civil Service for a list of acceptable companies who provide this service. Duties

As a Mineral Resources Specialist 1, you would perform beginning-level professional mineral resources work under the supervision of higher-level staff. You would be advanced, without further examination, to Mineral Resources Specialist 2 (current salary $61,496) after one year of satisfactory service as a Mineral Resources Specialist 1.

As a Mineral Resources Specialist 2, you would perform technical and environmental evaluations on all drilling permit applications and resolve any technical questions or deficiencies; conduct detailed compliance inspections of drilling and production equipment; inspect underground natural gas storage, liquefied petroleum gas storage and solution mining facilities, and analyze inspection and withdrawal/production data; investigate complex complaints, accidents and non routine incidents involved with drilling, completion, or production; perform basic mineral resource analyses/studies; and assist in managing computerized information systems and the onshore leasing programs.

Subject of Examination

There will be a written test which you must pass in order to be considered for appointment. The written test is designed to test for knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as: For Examination Numbers

Understanding and interpreting topographic maps, dimensional drawings and technical information - These questions test for the ability to read and analyze topographic maps, written technical material, and various types of technical drawings, and to perform related simple computations. All the information needed to answer the questions will be provided in the topographic maps, drawings, and written material. X 
2. Collection, analysis and presentation of data, including basic statistics - These questions test for knowledge of the proper procedures and methods used to gather, evaluate, organize and utilize various types of technical data and information, and the fundamental concepts, terminology and computations involved in statistical analysis for mineral resources and other environmental studies. 3. Understanding and interpreting written material - These questions test for the ability to understand and interpret written material. You will be presented with brief reading passages and will be asked questions about the passages. You should base your answers to the questions only on what is presented in the passages and not on what you may happen to know about the topic. XX
4. Terminology, equipment and practices related to oil, gas, solution mining, and underground gas storage wells - These questions test for knowledge of the practices, equipment, and terminology involved in the fields of oil, gas, and solution salt mining; and may include such areas as proper leasing and drilling procedures; production methods used; logging, perforating, hydrofracture, and injection mining practices; proper methods of well completion and plugging; and underground gas storage procedures.  X
5. Environmental and safety considerations related to oil and gas drilling, production and underground gas storage, including siting and reclamation - These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in assessing the potential environmental impacts of oil and gas drilling, production, and underground storage procedures; proper environmental oversight of these procedures; and effective regulation of siting, production, reclamation, and safe operating procedures.  X
6. Preparing written material - These questions test for the ability to present information clearly and accurately, and to organize paragraphs logically and comprehensibly. For some questions, you will be given information in two or three sentences followed by four restatements of the information. You must then choose the best version. For other questions, you will be given paragraphs with their sentences out of order. You must then choose, from four suggestions, the best order for the sentences. XX
7. Principles and practices of petroleum engineering and geology - These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the field of petroleum engineering and geology, and may include such areas as geologic formations indicative of petroleum deposits; locating and drilling for petroleum deposits; drilling methods used; and construction and maintenance of production wells.  X
8. Mathematics, including algebra and geometry - These questions test for the ability to read, analyze, and solve basic written problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, algebraic equations, and geometric concepts and figures. X 

Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime Veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits to your final passing score.
