On or before September 29, 2018, you must have:
Either 1. graduated from high school or have earned a high school equivalency diploma AND three years of full time professional experience involving conservation, preservation, or historic collections;
Or 2. a bachelor?s or higher degree in art history, collections management, conservation, fine arts, history, public history, museum studies, or photographic preservation* AND one year of full time professional experience involving conservation, preservation, or historic collections.
*Only the degrees listed are considered qualifying for this examination.
If you expect to meet the educational requirements by January 31, 2019, you can be admitted to the written test, but you cannot be considered for appointment until you submit proof of successful completion of the educational requirement to the Appointing Authority at the time of the employment interview. Failure to meet the educational requirements by January 31, 2019 may result in your removal from the eligible list.
- Your degree, high school diploma, or equivalency diploma must have been awarded by a college, university, high school, or educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree or high school diploma was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to the Examination Information Desk of the NYS Department of Civil Service for a list of acceptable companies who provide this service. These positions exist in the State Education Department in Albany only.
As a Historic Conservation Technician 2, you would digitize and/or microfilm a variety of archival formats using available equipment, including a flatbed scanner, large format scanners and a camera with copy stand, or a microfilm planetary camera; edit, format, and perform quality control on reformatted records according to State Archives standards using appropriate software; contribute content to the State Archives digital management system by uploading images and adding metadata; and monitor digital storage to ensure timely processing of images. Under the direction of an Archives Conservation Specialist, you would assist in evaluating and preparing records requested for digitization, preservation, transportation, and/or exhibition, including documentation, simple mending, local or overall flattening, and simple rehousing; assist with the evaluation and treatment of damaged material in the event of a disaster; and participate in collections and holdings maintenance activities, such as assisting in building and collections surveys, monitoring environmental conditions in the Office of Cultural Education (OCE) using hydrothermographs and dataloggers, adjusting and calibrating recording equipment, and recommending solutions to problems identified through monitoring. Incumbents would also participate in records retrievals and the safe transportation of collections from storage to research or exhibition spaces as well as participate in the Collection Response Team to plan for and respond to situations that may place the collections in jeopardy.Back To Top
Subject of Examination
There will be a written test which you must pass in order to be considered for appointment. The written test is designed to test for knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:
- Office record keeping - These questions test your ability to perform common office record keeping tasks. The test consists of two or more "sets" of questions, each set concerning a different problem. Typical record keeping problems might involve the organization or collation of data from several sources; scheduling; maintaining a record system using running balances; or completion of a table summarizing data using totals, subtotals, averages and percents. You should bring with you a hand-held battery- or solar-powered calculator for use on this test. You will not be permitted to use the calculator function of your cell phone.
- Preparing written material - These questions test for the ability to present information clearly and accurately, and to organize paragraphs logically and comprehensibly. For some questions, you will be given information in two or three sentences followed by four restatements of the information. You must then choose the best version. For other questions, you will be given paragraphs with their sentences out of order. You must then choose, from four suggestions, the best order for the sentences.
- Principles and techniques of handling, using and preserving archival materials - This tests your knowledge of the principles and techniques necessary for the proper handling, using and preserving of archival materials. It includes, but is not limited to, such areas as physical upkeep and preservation of materials, including documents, books, photographs, and other materials, such as those used for genealogical and other historical research.
Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime Veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits to your final passing score.

Most written tests are held on Saturdays. Admission to Examination
Notice to appear for the test may be conditional as review of applications may not be made until after the test. Taking State and Local Examinations Scheduled for the Same Day
If you have applied to take a written test announced by either one or several local jurisdictions (county, town, city) scheduled to be held on the same test date as this written test, you must notify each of the local jurisdictions no later than two weeks before the test date to make arrangements for taking all tests at one test site. All tests will be held at the state examination center. Do not bring cell phones, beepers, headphones, or any electronic or other communication devices to the test site. The use of such devices at the test site in the test room, hallways, restrooms, building, grounds, or other areas could result in your disqualification.
