|You may be assigned to either Saturday or Sunday to take your test. The Department of Civil Service reserves the right to administer tests either online or with paper booklets and answer sheets. Your admission notice will tell you whether your test will be administered online. You cannot request a day in advance or change your scheduled day.|

Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester Counties will receive an additional $3,026 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange, or Putnam Counties will receive an additional $1,513 annual mid-Hudson adjustment.

Either 1. a bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, architecture, or architectural technology;
Or 2. an associate's degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, architecture, or architectural technology AND two years of drafting experience including one year of specialized drafting experience on electrical projects;
Or 3. a certificate in computer-aided drafting* issued by a regionally accredited college or university AND three years of drafting experience including at least one year of specialized drafting experience on electrical projects;
Or 4. four years of drafting experience including at least one year of specialized drafting experience on electrical projects.
For No. 26-807:
Either 1. a bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, architecture, or architectural technology;
Or 2. an associate's degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, architecture, or architectural technology AND two years of drafting experience including one year of specialized drafting experience on mechanical, fire protection, HVAC, or plumbing projects;
Or 3. a certificate in computer-aided drafting* issued by a regionally accredited college or university AND three years of drafting experience including at least one year of specialized drafting experience in mechanical, fire protection, HVAC, and plumbing projects;
Or 4. four years of drafting experience including at least one year of specialized drafting experience on mechanical, fire protection, HVAC, or plumbing projects.
*Certificates from a Trade or Technical school will be accepted only if it is from an institution that is regionally accredited or recognized by the NYS Department of Education. To check if your certificate came from an educational institution accepted by the NYS Department of Education, please visit their website at http://www.nysed.gov/heds/IRPSL1.html. If your school is listed, select it to see if the drafting program is also listed. Please note: It is the drafting program that needs to be accepted, not just the school.
If you expect to meet the educational requirements by June 30, 2020, you can be admitted to the written test, but you cannot be considered for appointment until you submit proof of successful completion of the educational requirement to the Appointing Authority at the time of the employment interview. Failure to meet the educational requirements by June 30, 2020 may result in your removal from the eligible list.
- Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to the Examination Information Desk of the NYS Department of Civil Service for a list of acceptable companies who provide this service. - A promotion examination is also being held for these positions. If you are eligible for appointment from a promotion list, you may not be appointed in your own agency from the list resulting from this examination open to the public.
- Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a prorated basis.

These positions exist in the Office of General Services.
As a Principal Drafting Technician (Electrical), you would make and revise drawings and working plans using CADD/BIM software for electrical projects. You would draw elevations, floor plans, and sections; do detailing; assist in preparing data for estimates; assist in preparing and reviewing specifications; make electrical drafting calculations; check shop drawings; check the work of other drafting technicians; and you might perform field work to develop information and data. You will also be responsible for providing instructions, technical coordination, and assistance to the project drafting staff.
As a Principal Drafting Technician (Mechanical), you would make and revise drawings and working plans using CADD/BIM for mechanical, fire protection, HVAC, or plumbing projects. You would draw elevations, floor plans, and sections; do detailing; assist in preparing data for estimates; assist in preparing and reviewing specifications; make mechanical drafting calculations; check shop drawings; check the work of other drafting technicians; and you might perform field work to develop information and data. You will also be responsible for providing instruction, technical coordination, and assistance to the project drafting staff.
Subject of Examination
|There will be a written test which you must pass in order to be considered for appointment. The written test is designed to test for knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:||For Examination Numbers|
|1. Mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry - These questions test for the ability to read, analyze, and solve technician-level written problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, algebraic equations, geometric concepts and figures, and basic trigonometric functions.||X||X|
|2. Understanding and interpreting plans and specifications, including quantity estimates - These questions test for the ability to read and analyze construction drawings and technical written material and for the ability to calculate the amount of materials needed for portions of construction projects based on the information presented. Knowledge of estimating techniques and how construction materials are utilized in specified projects is required.||X||X|
|3. Computer-assisted drafting (CAD) technology - These questions test for knowledge of the basic concepts, terminology, and proper procedures to use when creating technical drawings utilizing computerized drafting software.||X||X|
|4. Building mechanical system plans, specifications, methods, materials, and basic design - These questions test for the ability to read and understand mechanical system diagrams and specifications for various mechanical system components and for the knowledge of concepts, equipment, proper techniques, and materials used in the design, construction, and repair of plumbing, heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and fire protection systems.||X|

Building electrical system plans, specifications, methods, materials, and basic design -These questions test for the ability to read and understand electrical system diagrams and specifications for various electrical system components and for the knowledge of concepts, equipment, proper techniques, and materials used in the design, construction, and repair of building power, wiring, lighting, and fire and security alarm systems.||X|
Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime Veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits to your final passing score.

Eligibility for Employment

Most written tests are held on Saturdays. Admission to Examination
Notice to appear for the test may be conditional as review of applications may not be made until after the test. Taking State and Local Examinations Scheduled for the Same Day
If you have applied to take a written test announced by either one or several local jurisdictions (county, town, city) scheduled to be held on the same test date as this written test, you must notify each of the local jurisdictions no later than two weeks before the test date to make arrangements for taking all tests at one test site. All tests will be held at the state examination center. Cell Phones or Electronic/Communication Devices at the Test Site
Do not bring cell phones, beepers, headphones, or any electronic or other communication devices to the test site. The use of such devices at the test site in the test room, hallways, restrooms, building, grounds, or other areas could result in your disqualification.
