Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or WestchesterCounties will receive an additional $1,302 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange, or PutnamCounties will receive an additional $651 annual Mid-Hudson adjustment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: On or before April 30, 2007, you must have:

Either: a five-year bachelor's or higher-level degree in architecture;
Or: be licensed and currently registered as an architect in New York State.

NOTES:

  1. Your degree must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYSEducation Department as following acceptable educational practices. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the UnitedStates and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to the Examination Information Desk of the Department of Civil Service for a list of acceptable companies who provide this service.This information is also available here. You must pay the required evaluation fee. If you are applying on the Internet, you must mail the independent verification of equivalency to the NYS Department of Civil Service, Albany, New York, 12239, Attention: S2DAG.
  2. Information regarding NYS licensure requirements for architects may be obtained at http://www.op.nysed.gov/archlic.htm or from the NYS Education Department, Office of the Professions, Architecture Unit, 89 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY 12234-1000.
  3. A program is available in some agencies which permits advancement to Assistant Architect, SG-20, (salary $49,992) without further examination for incumbents meeting the requirements. Incumbents who have passed four parts of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) and have completed one year of successful service may be eligible. Interested candidates should inquire regarding this program during the employment interview.
  4. New York State residence is not required.

THE POSITIONS: The majority of these positions exist in the Office of General Services in Albany. The Housing Finance Agency; the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation; and the Thruway Authority each have one position.

DUTIES: As a Junior Architect, you would assist higher-level architects by performing professional architectural work of limited scope in the planning, design, and construction of a wide variety of building projects. Some travel may be required.

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION: There will be no written test. The test will consist of an evaluation of your education and experience.

If you meet the Minimum Qualifications you will be sent a supplemental questionnaire to complete and return. The questionnaire will be used to evaluate your education and experience against the general background/critical activities of the position. This questionnaire will be the only basis for rating your education and experience.

Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime veterans' and Civil Service Law Section85-a credits to your final passing score.
