Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester Counties will receive an additional $1,302 annual downstate adjustment.

Minimum Qualifications

On or before the date of the application, you must have:

  1. a master's degree; AND
  2. New York State permanent or professional certification in one of the subject areas and corresponding grade levels listed above; AND
  3. five years of full time classroom teaching experience in that subject area and corresponding grade levels.

Notes

  1. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a prorated basis.
  2. New York State residence is not required.
  3. Your degree must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to the Examination Information Desk of the NYS Department of Civil Service for a list of acceptable companies who provide this service. You must pay the required evaluation fee. If you are applying on the Internet, you must mail the independent verification of equivalency to the NYS Department of Civil Service, Alfred E. Smith State Office Building, Albany, New York 12239. Attention: S4LSS.
  4. Travel Requirements: Appointment to certain positions requires extensive travel within a designated area of assignment. Appointees to these positions may be required to operate a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.
  5. If you meet the Minimum Qualifications you may also be interested in competing in the examinations for Assistant in Instructional Services. You may file for any combination of these examinations by completing one application form listing the number(s) and title(s) of the examination(s) in which you are interested. The appropriate processing fee must be filed for each examination.

Duties

As an Associate in Instructional Services, you would perform many of the same duties as the Assistant in Instructional Services (see examination announcement for Assistant in Instructional Services) but at a higher level and you may supervise. You would have administrative responsibility for education programs and instructional services in such areas as curriculum development, examination development, and/or program development. You would provide assistance to school administrators, teachers, and parents on the learning standards, resource guides, and new assessments in your certification area; provide subject specific technical assistance; develop and conduct training and workshops; research and prepare training materials, grants and contracts, and informational material; implement and monitor educational grants; and serve as liaison with professional organizations and coordinate with other state agencies.

Subject of Examination

There will be no written test. The test will consist of an evaluation of your education and experience.

If you meet the Minimum Qualifications you will be sent a supplemental questionnaire to complete and return. The questionnaire will be used to evaluate you in the areas of 1) education and professional development, 2) professional and administrative experience, 3) testing and assessment, and 4) training and staff development against the general background/critical activities of the position. This questionnaire will be the only basis for rating your education and experience.

Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits to your final passing score.
