Eligibles who met the "B" qualifications, and who are subsequently appointed to an "A" title may request to have their name added to the "A" list, when they have the one year of service required for appointment. The request should be submitted in writing to the Department of Civil Service, The State Campus, Building 1, Albany, New York 12239, Attn: Staffing Section 5.
DUTIES: As a Head Offset Printing Machine Operator, you would administer a large installation encompassing a variety of reproduction and auxiliary equipment. You would furnish technical supervision over all reproduction and related operations, be responsible for the completion of work on schedule and provide cost estimates for specific jobs. You might also be required to provide detailed staffing and materials data for budget purposes.
As a Principal Offset Printing Machine Operator, you would supervise and coordinate the work of a large printing unit. You would develop and direct the application of standard printing procedures and assign job orders to the appropriate machines and operators. You would supervise the operation of machines, assist operators in making adjustments and repairs, inspect and approve completed work, arrange for necessary supplies and train new operators. You might detail and direct the layout of copy, plate-making procedures and related processes, and you might supervise small mail and supply operations.
As a Senior Offset Printing Machine Operator, you would work with and possibly supervise a group of employees operating a variety of reproduction and auxiliary equipment. You would schedule, assign and review work, make necessary mechanical adjustments and operate all equipment. You would keep production and supply records, train new operators and do related work as required.
Appointees in the New York City area (Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, Richmond [Staten Island], Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester Counties) will receive an additional $1,200 annual location pay differential.
SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION: There will be a written test and a performance test. Your score and ranking will be based on your written test performance. You will be required to pass a performance test on the equipment you would operate before you can be appointed. The performance test will be administered by the appointing agency. The performance test will be administered only if you pass the written test, and only if you are being considered for appointment. Only a sufficient number of candidates required to fill positions will be called to the performance test.
For Examination Number 34-490:
Keeping simple inventory records - These questions test your skill in following instructions in order to keep accurate records of different materials received and distributed from a central location. You will be given written directions for a set of records and forms on which records are kept. You are to complete these forms from partially completed records or from lists of materials, then answer questions about the completed records. You may be asked to compute total costs from quantities and unit prices. The ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide will be required. Specific knowledge of record keeping systems and techniques will not be needed.
Arithmetic reasoning - These questions test your ability to solve an arithmetic problem presented in sentence or short paragraph form. You must read the problem, understand the situation presented, decide what must be done to solve it, and apply the appropriate arithmetic operation(s) in the appropriate order, in order to determine the correct answer. Knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division will be necessary. Questions may also involve the use of percents, decimals, and fractions.
Administrative supervision - These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices involved in directing the activities of a large subordinate staff, including subordinate supervisors. Questions relate to the personal interactions between an upper level supervisor and his/her subordinate supervisors in the accomplishment of objectives. Problems dealt with may involve, but not be limited to, such areas as: assigning work to and coordinating the activities of several units, establishing and guiding staff development programs, evaluating the performance of subordinate supervisors, and maintaining relationships with other organizational sections.
Understanding and interpreting written material - These questions test how well you comprehend written material. You will be provided with brief reading selections and will be asked questions about the selections. All the information required to answer the questions will be presented in the selections; you will not be required to have any special knowledge relating to the subject areas of the selections.
For Examination Number 34-489:
Arithmetic computation with calculator - These questions test for the ability to use a calculator to do basic computations. Questions will involve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You may also be asked to calculate averages and percents, and to round an answer to the nearest whole number or to one or more decimal places. YOU SHOULD BRING WITH YOU A HAND-HELD BATTERY- OR SOLAR-POWERED CALCULATOR FOR USE ON THIS TEST.
Supervision and training - These questions are designed to test for the knowledge required by a supervisor to set goals, plan and organize work, train workers in how to do their jobs, and direct workers towards meeting the established goals. The supervisory concepts covered may include assigning and reviewing work, evaluating performance, maintaining work quality, motivating employees, increasing efficiency, and dealing with problems that may arise on the job. The training concepts covered may include determining the necessity for training, selecting appropriate training methods, and evaluating the effectiveness of training.

If you pass, your seniority credit(s), if any, will be included in the computation of your final score. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any war-time veterans credits to your final passing score.
CREDIT FOR SENIORITY: Seniority is credited at the rate of one credit for each five year period (or fraction thereof) excluding the first year of service.
