Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester Counties will receive an additional $3,026 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange, or Putnam Counties will receive an additional $1,513 annual mid-Hudson adjustment.
The Positions: These positions exist in the Department of Motor Vehicles and are located statewide in the following counties: Albany, Bronx, Erie, Kings, Monroe, Nassau, New York, Oneida, Onondaga, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester.
Minimum Qualifications
On or before August 1, 2022, you must have graduated from high school or have earned a high school equivalency diploma AND you must have:
Either 1: one year of experience in a position where your primary responsibility was providing customer service* to the general public** either in an environment with substantial face-to-face interaction or in a call center environment.
Or 2: 30 college semester credit hours.
*For the purposes of this examination, customer service is defined as dealing with many different individuals on a continuous basis where verbal communication is the primary means of accomplishing the duties of the position.
**For the purposes of this examination, the general public is a broad range of people NOT limited to a specific group of the public.
Qualifying experience: For the purpose of this examination qualifying experience could include call center agent, customer service representative, public facing hospitality professional, sales representative providing information and service, or a telemarketer. If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.
Examples of non-qualifying experience include but are not limited to: Experience as a geriatric ward aide, home and day care aide, or school bus driver, would NOT be considered experience with a broad range of the general public.
Your required educational credentials must have been awarded by an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the United States (U.S.) Department of Education/Secretary of Education. If awarded by an institution outside of the U.S. and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. As a Motor Vehicle Representative or Motor Vehicle Representative (Various Language Parenthetics), you would have substantial in-person or telephone contact with members of the public seeking services or information regarding licenses, registrations, identification, testing, insurance, penalties, hearings, and related agency programs. You will be expected to effectively use a computer with multiple applications running simultaneously. You may be required to operate telecommunication consoles, cameras, a cash drawer, photocopiers, fax machines, scanners, calculators, etc. You may be responsible for processing customer payments such as: cash, checks, credit card charges, and inventories of documents, license plates, registration stickers, and other security items. In an issuing office setting, the majority of your time will be spent assisting the public by greeting the public as they arrive in the office as well as in processing complex and varied transactions by entering data on a personal computer using a keyboard and mouse, and/or providing detailed information to large numbers of people. If assigned to a call center, you would wear a headset and would be expected to effectively answer telephone calls which are automatically and continuously distributed by a complex telephonic system. Telephone calls may be monitored for quality assurance. As with many jobs interacting with the general public, you may encounter uncooperative or sometimes hostile individuals. You would be expected to act in a calm, courteous, and reasonable manner even under very difficult, highly stressful, and at times, confrontational circumstances. Notes: You cannot access the test prior to applying for the examination. To be considered for appointment to this title, you must pass a training and experience test. The training and experience test utilizes an online questionnaire to evaluate your minimum qualifications and training and experience against the general requirements of the position(s). Your responses on the questionnaire will be the only way to evaluate your minimum qualifications and will be the only basis for rating your training and experience. After submitting your online application, you must continue to the online questionnaire to complete the process. Failure to complete the questionnaire will result in disqualification from the examination. The information you provide on the application and questionnaire is subject to verification. Ambiguity, vagueness or omissions will not be decided in your favor. You may be required to provide written verification of the education, experience, certification, or licensure claimed. False statements may result in removal from the eligible list or termination of employment. Your final score must be 70 or higher to pass. Your final score on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime Veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits.
