**Due to the size of the candidate population for this test date, you may be assigned to either Saturday, May 12, 2018, or Sunday, May 13, 2018, to take your test. Your admission notice will tell you where and when you are scheduled to appear. You cannot request a day in advance or change your scheduled day.

IMPORTANT: Unless waived, you must pay the non-refundable processing fee. Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester Counties will receive an additional $3,026 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange, or Putnam Counties will receive an additional $1,513 annual mid-Hudson adjustment.

Minimum Qualifications

On or before May 12, 2018, you must have:

Either 1. a bachelor’s degree in American Studies, Art History, History, History of Technology, Museum Studies, or Public History AND two years of professional experience in collections in a historical museum, general museum with historical collections or historic site.

Or 2. a master’s degree or higher in any of the above disciplines and ONE year of the qualifying experience as noted above.

If you expect to meet the educational requirements by September 30, 2018, you can be admitted to the written test, but you cannot be considered for appointment until you submit proof of successful completion of the educational requirement to the Appointing Authority at the time of the employment interview. Failure to meet the educational requirements by September 30, 2018 may result in your removal from the eligible list.


  1. Your degree must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. You can write to the Examination Information Desk of the NYS Department of Civil Service for a list of acceptable companies who provide this service.   2. Qualifying part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a prorated basis.

    As a Curator 1, you would analyze collections and themes related to historic sites and historic preservation efforts within the Division of Historic Preservation. This work includes research of objects and collections to determine placement within a historical context; understanding the appropriateness of objects to historic site furnishing plans and interpretive needs; research and document methods of fabrication, style and composition of objects and buildings; partnering with other Historic Preservation staff to plan exhibit development and select appropriate objects for inclusion in exhibits in historical buildings and conducting background studies regarding acquisitions of historical objects as they relate to the historical setting/buildings. Working in collaboration with other OPRHP units on preservation of objects and buildings. Curator 1’s also provide technical assistance and advice to the public and other institutions about collections and curation of historic objects.

    Subject of Examination

    There will be a written test which you must pass in order to be considered for appointment. The written test is designed to test for knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in such areas as:

    1. Museum operations and collections care - These questions will cover techniques for the handling, display, care, storage and inventory of museum collections and other site property.
    2. Office record keeping - These questions test your ability to perform common office record keeping tasks. The test consists of two or more "sets" of questions, each set concerning a different problem. Typical record keeping problems might involve the organization or collation of data from several sources; scheduling; maintaining a record system using running balances; or completion of a table summarizing data using totals, subtotals, averages and percents. You should bring with you a hand-held battery- or solar-powered calculator for use on this test. You will not be permitted to use the calculator function of your cell phone.
    3. Preparing reports and official documents - These questions test for the ability to prepare reports and other official documents for use within and among governmental agencies, in legal or regulatory settings, or for dissemination to the public. Some questions test for a knowledge of grammar, usage, punctuation, and sentence structure. Others test for the ability to present information clearly and accurately, to use the proper tone, and to organize paragraphs logically and comprehensibly.

    Your final score must be 70 or higher in order to pass. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime Veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits to your final passing score.

    If you have applied to take a written test announced by either one or several local jurisdictions (county, town, city) scheduled to be held on the same test date as this written test, you must notify each of the local jurisdictions no later than two weeks before the test date to make arrangements for taking all tests at one test site.
