Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester Counties will receive an additional $3,026 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange, or Putnam Counties will receive an additional $1,513 annual mid-Hudson adjustment.

The Positions: These positions exist in the Department of Transportation and the Department of Environmental Conservation and are located statewide.

Minimum Qualifications

On or before August 1, 2022, you must have:

Either 1: Proof of passing the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Fundamentals of Geology (FG) examination AND a bachelor's degree or higher in earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology, environmental geosciences, geochemistry, geological engineering, geology, geological science, geophysics, or hydrogeology;

Or 2: Proof of passing the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Fundamentals of Geology (FG) Examination AND one year of experience in economic geology, hydrogeology, environmental geology or engineering geology;

3: A professional geologist licensure with current registration.

Qualifying experience: If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.

Your required educational credentials must have been awarded by an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the United States (U.S.) Department of Education/Secretary of Education. If awarded by an institution outside of the U.S. and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Duties

As an Assistant Geologist, you would be responsible for performing, supervising, analyzing and interpreting geologic and geophysical work for transportation projects, structural sites, hazardous and non-hazardous waste disposal sites, mining operations, geologic hazard evaluations, and the development and evaluation of groundwater supplies. Duties may include but are not limited to: making recommendations pertaining to slope designs and foundation designs of structures; evaluating, conducting, and/or supervising blasting operations; evaluating the stability of slopes and making recommendations for stabilization and protection of highways and structures; conducting petrographic, lithologic, topographic, hydrogeologic or structural geologic analyses and evaluating soil and water quality sampling and testing procedures and protocols; and performing and evaluating groundwater contaminant fate and transport mechanisms. Duties may be performed in the field on projects and job sites, in the office, and/or in a laboratory. You also might assist in the preparation and review of the geologic aspects of engineering and environmental investigations, reports, studies, and expert testimony.

To be considered for appointment to this title, you must pass an online test. The online test consists of a questionnaire that asks questions about your education, training, and work experience. This online questionnaire IS YOUR TEST and should be completed after submitting your application. The online test can be accessed by clicking on the following link: https://tms.cs.ny.gov/TestDriver/Login/Login.aspx.

Responding to these questions, and submitting your questionnaire, is required to complete the examination process. You will not receive a score on this test unless you complete and submit the online questionnaire. You must complete the test by 11:59 pm on August 31, 2022.

The answers you provide to the questions will be used to rate and score your test against the general requirements of the position(s). To prepare, it may be helpful to have dates of completed education and work experience available as you answer questions. It is recommended you use a personal computer or personal laptop to complete your online test.

Your final score must be 70 or higher to pass. Your final score on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime Veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits.

Applicants are required to have a Personal NY.gov account and keep their email address up to date. The Department of Civil Service and other state agencies will communicate with you through email correspondence. This may include the notification of your test arrangements, examination results, and canvassing you for interest in appointment.
