Proposal Information

Description:

The Division of Research and Statistics is a professional office. Staff is composed of Economists, Statisticians, Program Research Specialists, and Office Assistant 3s (Calculations). Hours are 9-5 and interaction with the public is limited. There may be some interaction with Executive Staff.

Looking for someone with experience with economic data collection, aggregation, and analysis - especially social research and/or surveys. They should also have some familiarity with computer programming/coding (PLSQL would be great). They will need to be able to write up their findings and present them to management if necessary.
First, we will be doing a program review in the fall of our telecommuting pilot program. The intern will assist with data collection (from surveys and administrative data) and analysis, including writing some or all of the final report. The intern may have a chance to report out on the findings to Executive Staff.

Second, we are revamping our classification process for businesses reporting wage and employment data to the New York State Department of Labor. The intern would assist in the current process while assisting in the development of new and perhaps automated methods of collecting this information.

The intern will gain experience with actual data collection methodology and data analysis. He/she will learn about labor market information collection and review, including information produced by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). He/she will have the ability to practice writing and presentation skills, and will be instructed in the plain language requirements necessary for public agency reports.
