Description:
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Finger Lakes Water Hub in Syracuse, NY has two summer internships available for qualifying candidates. The selected candidates will work with the Finger Lakes Water Hub staff to complete tasks in one of two difference areas including:
1. Finger Lakes Data Compilation:
o Document all available and existing data relating to water quality, land use, bathymetry and fisheries data for all 11 Finger Lakes and their watersheds.
o Characterize existing data on availability, ownership, reliability, if it was conducted with a Quality Assurance Project Plan, and if was analyzed in an ELAP-certified lab.
o Manage and store available data on NYSDEC's drives.
o Work with Finger Lakes Hub staff to analyze available data and identify data gaps.
2. The Use of Optical Brighteners to Detect Septic System Impacts in the Finger Lakes:
o Coordinate field sampling events for the Finger Lakes Water Hub Optical Brightener Project.
o Field collect associated samples, such as water samples for chemical analysis.
o Field collect physical and chemical parameters.
o Process samples, including logging new samples and data entry including various types of field data.
o Prepare field sampling equipment prior to field work.
