Description:
The New York Department of State Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH) is seeking an unpaid Legal Intern for the Summer of 2018. OAH is an administrative tribunal with jurisdiction over 33 occupational licenses regulated by the New York Department of State, including security guard registrations, real estate salespersons/brokers, real estate appraisers, and appearance enhancement licensees. The tribunal presides over disciplinary hearings and appeals relating to applicants seeking an occupational license or where the Department of State seeks to sanction a licensee. OAH is mandated by law to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public and to safeguard the due process rights of current licensees and applicants for licensure.
OAH's mission is to conduct fair, impartial, timely hearings for the occupations and professions regulated by the New York Department of State. OAH is also committed to expanding access to justice for all New Yorkers.
The intern will work under the supervision of the Administrative Law Judges in OAH's New York City office. Typically, the range of duties assigned to the legal intern will include legal research, preparing memos for the ALJs, drafting findings of fact, proofreading, communicating with OAH support staff regarding case management, assisting the judges during hearings, and working on special projects aimed at promoting accessibility and ensuring fairness for all parties, including those facing financial and other disadvantages.
