Proposal Information

Description:

The New York State Department of Financial Services is seeking motivated law school students to serve on behalf of the people of the State of New York as Summer Legal Interns. Located in downtown Manhattan, the Department is the primary state regulator charged with enforcing the financial services laws, promoting the safety and soundness of financial institutions, and protecting consumers from financial fraud and abuse.

Summer Legal Interns will work with the various legal divisions in fulfilling the agency's mission. Interns will have the opportunity to assist in investigating violations of New York Banking, Insurance, and Financial Services Laws. When violations are uncovered, interns will aid in bringing enforcement actions. Interns will also help provide legal guidance to sectors of the financial services industry and contribute to the process of developing rules, regulations, and legislation. In addition, two interns will focus exclusively on audit and compliance matters. Summer Legal Interns can expect to work in a dynamic office and make meaningful contributions, while gaining valuable research, writing, and investigative experience.

Divisions within the Department that participate in the Summer Legal Intern Program include the following: Financial Frauds and Consumer Protection (comprised of a civil unit and criminal unit), Real Estate Finance, Banking, Capital Markets, Insurance, Internal Audit, and the Office of General Counsel.

Students are expected to commit to a minimum of 8 weeks. The position is uncompensated, but students with school stipends are welcome
