Classification Specification

PUBLICATIONS PRODUCTION ASSISTANT is responsible for the non-editorial phases of printing production: performs production functions required in preparation of publications and other printed materials for printing; assists in the selection of paper stock and ink to be used; assists in determining method of reproduction; provides advice in planning of publications, including recommendations concerning best method of copy preparation; acts as liaison person between agency and printers, designers and engravers; assists in selecting commercial artists for art work; makes cost estimates of printing jobs; writes printing specifications and prepares purchase requests or purchase orders; marks manuscripts for typography and layout; checks proofs for conformance to specifications; prepares dummies; clears proofs with authors and editors; inspects printed materials for quality; reviews and evaluates new equipment and processes and makes appropriate recommendations for utilization; follows up printing jobs to assure maintenance of printing schedules; maintains printing production records; may be responsible for ordering stock and maintaining stock inventory. QUALIFICATIONS: Five years of experience in the preparation of material for printing, including letterpress and offset, or college graduation and three years of the above experience or college graduation with specialization in commercial art or printing and two years of the above experience.
