Classification Standard




The one position in this class manages a variety of health care systems within the Department of Correctional Services (DOCS).  The incumbent provides oversight, policy recommendations to Department executives, technical assistance, supervision, and correctional facility case interventions. 


This position is classified in the Main Office of DOCS.  All incumbents at DOCS assist in the total care and confinement of inmates sentenced to the custody of the Department and perform various duties and functions in conjunction with the overall operation of a facility and/or location to which they are assigned.




DIRECTOR HEALTH SERVICES OPERATIONS AND MANAGEMENT:  director level; responsible for delivery of quality, cost effective health services to the inmate population of DOCS; coordinates the activities of the Assistant Commissioner of Health Services and the health services personnel at Central Office, regional, and facility levels.




            The Director, Support Operations has responsibility for procurement, capital funds management, inmate and state uniform issue, Commissary and State Shop operations, radio communications and fleet vehicles, emergency housing inventories, and health and sanitation audits.  Positions set procurement standards for expenditures in excess of $500 million annually and managing a multi-million dollar capital equipment program.


            The Director, Correctional Services Facilities Planning and Development has responsibility for the formulation and implementation of maintenance policy and policy for the construction of new and rehabilitation of existing correctional facilities.


            The Director, Correctional Education Programs oversees the operation of all academic and vocational educational programs administered by the Department. 




Direct a staff of professionals in the health care management of regional health services, health Information management, coordinated specialty care and capital projects, pharmacy operations, and utilization management/quality assurance. 



Recommend health services program policy to the Assistant Commissioner emphasizing the most cost effective use of health care resources.



Manage the daily operations of major segments of DOCS health care systems.






Promotion:   one year of service as an Assistant Director Correctional Health Services, or Director Correctional Nursing Services; or two years of service as a Supervisor Correctional Health Services Planning and Administration, Correctional Regional Health Services Administrator, Supervisor Communicable and Infectious Disease Control, or Supervisor Correctional Health Services Utilization Management.
