Classification Standard





Engineering Technicians assist field and office engineering and higher level engineering technician staff by performing technical duties in support of engineers, or construction or engineering programs.


Although these positions are found in several agencies, most positions are assigned in the central and regional offices of the Department of Transportation.




ENGINEERING TECHNICIANS: perform routine technical tasks under the direct supervision of engineers or higher level technicians; receive instructions about the work to be done and the methods to be used in performing work; and assist in investigating problems by gathering information and recommending solutions.




Under general supervision, inspects construction projects to ensure correct materials are used, work is performed correctly, and projects are constructed according to specifications and plans.



Participates in field survey teams.



Assists engineering and technical staff in planning and implementing projects and programs.





Promotion: one year of service as an Assistant Drill Rig Operator, Engineering Aide, Drafting Aide, Drafting Technician, or Environmental Engineering Technician 1.


Open Competitive: High school graduation or equivalent and one year of experience assisting in engineering, engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, electronics, electronics technology, landscape design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying.
