Classification Standard

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS SERIES

 

            Incumbents of these titles create, implement, and enforce dental policies and procedures, investigate complaints and inquiries about dental services, and take responsibility for the maintenance and acquisition of dental equipment.     

 

These positions are classified only at the Department of Correctional Services (DOCS) All incumbents at DOCS assist in the total care and confinement of inmates, sentenced to the custody of the Department and perform various duties and functions in conjunction with the overall operation of a facility and/or location to which they are assigned.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, CORRECTIONAL DENTAL SERVICES:  one position class; assists the Director in all aspects of his duties, including acting as his/her representative in liaison to other Regional Directors, and acting as his/her designee in his/her absence.

 

DIRECTOR, CORRECTIONAL DENTAL SERVICES:  one position class; responsible for the delivery of dental care to all inmates in the custody of the Department of Correctional Services.

 

RELATED CLASSES

 

Directors Dental Health, plan, administer and supervise the States dental public health programs and the dental health aspects of the medical assistance for needy persons program.

 

Dentists 3 and Dentists 4 function as general dental practitioners and also administer institution dental programs. Such administrative activities are characterized by responsibility for performing employee counseling, consulting on acute dental conditions referred by subordinate dentists, coordinating dental services with other clinical specialties, training staff, preparing budget, and ordering and maintaining dental equipment and supplies.

 

Regional Public Health Dentists assist regional and local health officers in planning, implementing, supervising, and evaluating local dental health programs.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, CORRECTIONAL DENTAL SERVICES

 

Responsible for conducting and reviewing annual audits of dental units at all correctional facilities.

 

 

Ensure that Special Housing Unit (SHU) inmates at all facilities have access to quality dental care.

 

 

Chair the Dental Review Committee.

 

Act on behalf of the Director in investigating complaints or allegations of substandard care.

 

 

Responsible for maintenance of equipment and new equipment acquisition.

 

 

DIRECTOR, CORRECTIONAL DENTAL SERVICES

 

Responsible for coordinating and supervising the efforts of all Dentists, to assure the provision of adequate dental services for all inmates on a statewide basis.

 

 

Plan and execute programs for the recruitment and retention of dental personnel.

 

 

Serve as a dental services expert for DOCS.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, CORRECTIONAL DENTAL SERVICES

 

Promotion:  one year of permanent competitive service as a Dentist 4 within the New York State Department of Correctional Services.

 


DIRECTOR, CORRECTIONAL DENTAL SERVICES

 

Promotion:  one year of permanent competitive service as an Assistant Director Correctional Dental Services or two years as a Dentist 4 within NYS Department of Correctional Services.
