Classification Standard

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

 

            Dental Hygienists assist dentists in their practice by performing preventive and therapeutic treatment procedures and by instructing patients in oral self care techniques.  Positions are found in various facilities of the Department of Correctional Services and the Offices of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Children and Family Services; SUNY Buffalo University, Stony Brook and Upstate Medical Center; and Helen Hayes Hospital.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

            DENTAL HYGIENIST:  works under the supervision of a licensed dentist; Licensure is required; can perform any of the tasks properly performed by a Dental Assistant, but in order to be classified as a Dental Hygienist must perform duties in the areas of preventive and therapeutic treatment and the instruction of patients in oral self care techniques for at least seventy percent of their working time.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

 

Performs dental services under the supervision of a dentist.

DENTAL HYGIENIST

 

Open Competitive:    Licensed by New York State as a Dental Hygienist and current registration to practice in New York State.
