BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
Chemist Aides perform basic chemistry functions to support activities performed by scientific and technical laboratory staff at various State agencies. Positions are classified on a seasonal basis to supplement operations during peak laboratory testing periods.
CHEMIST AIDE: seasonal; performs laboratory work requiring a basic knowledge of chemistry; and performs basic public health, food science, and environmental testing not requiring a professional license, under supervision of Laboratory Specialists or Research Scientists at various levels.
Conducts sample, specimen, and reagent preparation for use by scientific and technical laboratory staff. Monitors stock and quality of laboratory supplies associated with testing procedures, and informs supervisor of lack of equipment or supplies impacting operations. Under direction of supervisor, conducts basic public health, food science, and environmental tests which do not require a professional license. Records results and anomalies observed during laboratory tests, and maintains written records. Disposes of samples, specimens, supplies, and reagents when testing is completed, or when laboratory retention periods are exceeded; records disposals in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures. Calibrates testing instruments using standard procedures and samples.
Open Competitive: completion of six college credit hours in the natural sciences from an accredited college or university, with at least three credit hours in chemistry.
