Classification Standard

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

 

Phlebotomists collect blood specimens from inpatients and outpatients while adhering to established protocols to ensure proper sample collection and patient safety. They transport blood specimens to laboratory departments in accordance with proper procedures for such transport and handling. In addition, they conduct in-service education programs relating to theories and techniques of phlebotomy, and perform related clerical work.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

PHLEBOTOMIST: Non-competitive; full performance level; works under general supervision of higher level medical technology staff; substantial patient contact; may train medical technology students and others in the theory and practice of phlebotomy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

High School Diploma or equivalent

 

And

 

One year of experience as a Phlebotomist or a certificate in Phlebotomy from a recognized college, school, training program, hospital, health care facility, or the Armed Services.
